Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures

Position Vacancy:               Administrative Professional 0060A12
Appointment:            12 months
Job Title:                      Director of the Foreign Languages Media Center
Accepting Applications: Immediately.
Expected Starting Date: As soon as possible

The Director of the FLMC is a full time administrative-professional
(AP) position with the overall duties and responsibilities of the general
supervision of the FLMC.  S/he will assure that the overall audio-visual as
well as the computer needs of the faculty and teaching staff are met and
will provide technical support to the faculty and teaching staff.  S/he
will manage/assist in the development of software for language instruction,
coordinate maintenance of equipment, and supervise the work of the Media
Center.

The essential duties and responsibilties are as follows:

Direct day-to-day operations of the FLMC (Foreign Languages Media
Center), including tape-duplication, equipment check-out, and maintenance
of the remote-access servers and the mail server.
Direct the Instructional Support Computer Lab.  Make sure that all the
equipment is secure and in working order.
Direct the FLL web site, coordinating with section chairs and other web
page owners.  This includes updating information in a timely fashion,
adding information as appropriate, and redesigning the pages for increased
attractiveness.
Assign and supervise the work of the Electronics Technician, Research
Assistants (RAs) and work-study students.
Manage the FLMC account, discussing expenditures in excess of $100 and/or
in excess of budget with Assistant Head or Head of the Department.
Assess the use of technology in teaching in the department on a regular
basis.  Work with instructional staff on the use of technology in teaching
and provides technical support.  In addition to responding to service
requests, devise plans and strategies to improve the general computer
literacy of the staff.
Design and create new services or modify existing services in accordance
with faculty and staff needs.  Keep abreast of the latest developments in
foreign language pedagogy, develop and modify as needed a sound working
model for the FLMC.
Provide orientation for new instructional staff.
Advise FLL Head regarding purchases of electronic equipment.

Qualifications:

1)  Bachelors degree in Foreign Languages (Foreign Language Education,
Second Language Acquisition),
      engineering or computer-related field required.  Masters degree preferred.
2)  Working knowledge of (a) foreign language(s) and general knowledge of
foreign language pedagogy.
3)  Ability to work well with a large and diverse group of people.
4)  Some teaching experience desired.
