>Subject: A Survey on Web-based Course Management Tools
>Date: Tue, 2 May 2000 17:14:18 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
>Priority: NORMAL

------------------
PLEASE FORWARD THIS ON TO ALL LANGUAGE/LINGUISTICS COLLEAGUES USING WEB-BASED
COURSE MANAGEMENT TOOLS

IF YOU ARE USING A WEB_BASED COURSE MANAGEMENT TOOL (e.g. WebCT, CourseInfo,
etc.) TO TEACH A "FOREIGN" (NON-NATIVE TO THE COUNTRY/REGION/CULTURE IN WHICH
YOU TEACH) LITERATURE, LANGUAGE, ESL, OR LINGUISTICS (SLA, APPLIED, ETC.),
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO FILL OUT THE SURVEY AT

http://www.otal.umd.edu/wcmt-intro.html

---------------------------

Purpose of the survey --

We are doing research on faculty perceptions of Web-based Course Management
Tools (WCMs) in langauge education. The survey examines how faculty use WCMs
in their teaching and what they perceive to be the most "effective" tools in
terms of usefulness for their teaching, and helpfulness in the learning
process, as well as, the "popularity" of the tools in terms of likeability from
the students' perspective.

Following the survey, we will be conducting follow up interviews. This will
provide us more detailed information, as well as, anecdotal information
regarding the uses of WCMs in language education, benefits and pitfalls.

A summary of the results will be available to those who complete the survey
and request the results. An analysis of the survey results will, also, be
presented at a number of conferences in the coming year.

If you are using a WCM to teach a "foreign" (non-native to the
country/region/culture in which you teach) literature, language, ESL or
linguistics (SLA, applied, etc.) course, please fill out the survey at

http://www.otal.umd.edu/wcmt-intro.html

The survey should take 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Your participation is
greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Chris
