Sue - I've been directing a self-paced langauge program in Spanish for almost 2 years.  Our administration also believed that they could save money this way but it has not proven to be the case primarily because we refused to compromise the integrity of our courses. Perhaps if you are willing to forgo some of our requirements it could be done for less money. My university is just beginning a major cost-cutting (a.k.a.
"strategic planning") process which involves cutting faculty lines
and support staffing throughout the institution.  In order to continue
to be able to offer enough language courses to stay afloat, we are
looking at the possibility of using self-tutoring elementary French
and Spanish programs that don't require a full-time instructor.

Does anyone have experience with programs of this sort?  I know
some schools use distance learning for elementary languages--but
are there any actual computerized self-tutoring programs that can
be used locally, for instance, in a language lab?  And how does it
work?  How much teaching time does this type of program require?
And finally, what kind of results does one get from using a self-
tutoring course?

ANY input you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
