AT UMBC we have been charging students for print  copies for about 3 years
($.08 per page) Most of the computer labs on campus charge this. It is the
same price for computer print outs as copiers.  The students  have a
magnetic strip on their ID cards whereby they can have money put on their
account and we just debit using a Dart/Diebold system. The university
doesn't want cash handled by so many people so they went to this system.
It works very well and they paid for the machines so I was very happy.
(the first debit system we had, our dept. had to pay for the machine - it
cost $1700. By the time I finished paying back the bookstore for the
purchase the U. changed systems)

Prior to that, we did take cash and I just listed every transaction in a
steno book. We had a drawer at the desk that could lock and we just kept
change on hand. Card system is much better, less mess, less worry.  Good
luck.

I know students have lots of fees but they are not very judicious in their
printing. They would print it out and just put it in the trash or recycle
basket right away. Charging makes them think a little more about what
they are doing. I do not feel badly charging them.

As to a previous question on LLTI we do not charge students a lab fee.
There are indiviual fees for audio and print copies but that is up to them
to incur these fees.

Also we are a public university and the lab has a full time director and
student assistants. The lab director does not have any teaching
responsibilities - just demonstrating computer use for our 35 station lab.
