This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, August 22nd,
2012.
A pair of MISSISSIPPI KITES was seen feeding a juvenile MISSISSIPPI KITE in
Newmarket on August 17th.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER has been seen visiting a birdfeeder at a private
residence in Atkinson for several days during the past week.
A DICKCISSEL was seen on private property near Powdermill Pond in Hancock on
August 16th.
A FORSTER'S TERN was seen in Hampton Harbor on August 18th.
An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen at Little River Salt Marsh in North
Hampton on August 17th, and a GLOSSY IBIS was seen here on the 19th.
2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen at Plaice Cove in Hampton and 1 was seen at
Rye Ledge in Rye, all on August 19th.
A RED KNOT, 11 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and 35 ROSEATE TERNS were seen in
Hampton Harbor on August 19th.
A SANDERLING was reported from Spofford Lake in Chesterfield on August 19th.
An immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, and a WHIMBREL were both reported
from the Hampton Marsh area on August 19th.
A GREAT EGRET was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord on August 22nd.
A BLACK GUILLEMOT was reported from Rye on August 18th.
2 VIRGINIA RAILS were reported from Salem on August 16th.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS have started to migrate south and several groups were
reported from several locations during the past week, including 26 in
Concord on August 18th, 25 in Conway on the 18th, 14 in Hancock on the 20th,
25 along the Connecticut River in Lebanon on the 21st, 40 in Webster on the
22nd, and 50 in Contoocook on the 22nd.
Seasonally uncommon migrant songbirds reported during the past week included
2 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, 2 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, a BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, a
NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER.
Birders on a whale-watch cruise out of Rye Harbor on August 20th reported
126 GREAT SHEARWATERS, 102 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, many COMMON TERNS, 17
NORTHERN GANNETS, 14 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 4 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 3
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a PEREGRINE FALCON, a RED PHALAROPE, and a ROSEATE TERN
all seen in NH, ME, and MA waters.
