This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, April 2, 2009.
2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen foraging in the cornfields located at the end of
West Portsmouth Street in Concord on April 2nd.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Krif Road in Keene on March 31st, and one was
seen at Great Meadows in Charlestown on March 27th.
8 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported from Durham on March 27th.
Over 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in the trees in front of Chili's
restaurant on South Main Street in Lebanon on March 29th.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen at the Cocheco Valley Humane Society property in
Dover on April 1st.
A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen at the setbacks in Hinsdale on March
31st.
16 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 10 AMERICAN WIGEON, 100 COMMON MERGANSERS, and 1,000
GREATER SCAUP were reported from Great Bay on March 27th.
2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen on the ocean from Bicentennial Park in
Hampton on March 28th.
7 LESSER SCAUP were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on April
2nd.
2 GADWALL were seen at Ledyard Bridge in Hanover on April 2nd, 2 were seen
on Meadow Pond in Hampton on March 28th, and 2 were seen on a pond just
south of Great Meadows along Route 12 in Charlestown on the 26th.
4 NORTHERN PINTAILS were seen on Powwow Pond in Kingston on April 2nd.
3 PIED-BILLED GREBES were seen at the Deer Hill Wildlife Management Area in
Brentwood on April 1st.
A GLOSSY IBIS was seen at Bodwell Farm in East Kingston on March 28th. A
SNOWY EGRET was seen in Rye on April 2nd, and a GREAT EGRET was seen in Rye
on March 28th.
There were 2 unconfirmed BLACK VULTURE sightings during the past week,
including one in Dover on April 2nd, and one in North Walpole on March 30th.
A flock of 45 TURKEY VULTURES was reported from North Walpole on April 1st.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment
Plant on April 2nd. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation
are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and
be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask
birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The
Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are
always open during daylight hours.
An ICELAND GULL was seen in Farmington on April 2nd, and one was seen on Eel
Pond in Rye on March 28th.
14 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen at Great Bay Farm seen from Newington Road in
Greenland on March 28th. Smaller numbers of SNIPE were reported from several
other locations during the past week.
50 HORNED LARKS were seen in the fields behind the Post Office on Loudon
Road in Concord on March 30th.
6 FISH CROWS were seen on Fleet Street near Gilley's in Portsmouth on April
2nd, 2 were reported from Durham on March 29th, 2 were reported from
Baboosic Lake in Merrimack on March 27th, and one was reported from Tilton
on March 31st.
2 EVENING GROSBEAKS, and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER were seen on Hammond
Hollow Road in Gilsum on April 1st.
39 TREE SWALLOWS were seen on World's End Pond in Salem on April 1st.
15 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen on New Boston Road in Kingston on March 28th.
