This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for November 19, 2007 covering the
period November 12 - 18, 2007.

 

Highlights this week include the continued presence of a GREATER GREENLAND
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE  in Bellows Falls11/13, 11/14/11/18 and a sighting of
one individual at Herrick's Cove on 11/17;  an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER at
Herrick's Cove 11/13.

 

There was an unconfirmed sighting of a SNOWY OWL in Hartford on 11/17.

 

Two lingering AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were seen on 11/13 in Cornwall as well as
Orwell.

 

A juvenile YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was again sighted in Brandon on 11/14
and in West Brattleboro on 11/18. 

 

NORTHERN SHRIKES, whose numbers usually peak in early November, were spotted
in Johnson, Plainfield, Brownington, Woodbury and Ripton this week.

 

CEDAR and BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS continue to be sighted, with a flock of 50
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS seen in Middle bury on 11/11, 34 in Williston on 11/18, 2
in White River Junction on 11/18, 2 in a mixed flock in West Brattleboro on
11/19 and CEDAR WAXWINGS in Brattleboro and Herrick's Cove (45) on 11/18 and
a mixed flock in Essex Center on 11/15.

 

A late YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was spotted in Rutland on 11/18.

 

A CHIPPING SPARROW was observed in Panton on 11/13.

 

The irruption of northern finches is evident in the number of sightings
recorded this week:

 

PINE GROSBEAKS:  Plainfield (15), East Warren (6), Moretown (1), Brandon
(12), South Strafford (2), Underhill (10), Mt. Philo (1), Grafton (14),
South Newfane (20+), West Brattleboro (3), Huntington (5), West Brattleboro
(1), Rupert (3), St. Johnsbury (1), and Ripton.  

 

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS:  4 in Island Pond on 11/18. 

 

COMMON REDPOLLS:  South Starksboro (20, 25), Woodstock (8),  Ripton (10),
Plainfield (12), Grand Isle (1), White River Junction (25, 20), Middlebury
(10), Norwich (3), Brownsville (3), Brownington (5), Sudbury and South
Newfane.  

 

EVENING GROSBEAKS:  South Starksboro (12), Brandon (4), Huntington (2),
Sudbury, Hartland (6), Ripton (10) and Herrick's Cove.  

 

PINE SISKINS:   South Starksboro (20) on 11/16, Bellows Falls (24) on 11/18,
Herrick's Cove (45) on 11/18 and Brattleboro Retreat Meadows.
