This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, December 27th, 
2007.

A SNOWY OWL was seen in Hampton Marsh on the Seabrook side on December 26th. 
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen at the Dillant Hopkins Airport in Swanzey on or 
about December 23rd. A possible GREAT GRAY OWL was reported from New Boston 
on the 21st.



A dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen over Route 95 in Hampton, and a 
light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen near Krif Road in Keene, both on 
December 24th.



A pair of NORTHERN PINTAILS, a BALD EAGLE, an adult BLACK-HEADED GULL, 9 
ICELAND GULLS, 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS, an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and 30 
SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on 
December 26th. 7 BALD EAGLES were seen at the nearby landfill on the 22nd. 
The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on 
weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the 
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. 
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering 
Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during 
daylight hours.



3 ICELAND GULLS were seen at the parking lot of the Yankee Fisherman's 
Cooperative in Seabrook on December 25th.



A HOARY REDPOLL was seen in Jefferson on December 25th, 2 were reported from 
Diamond Ledge Road in Sandwich on the 23rd, 1 was reported from Granite Lake 
in Munsonville on the 23rd, and 1 was reported from Ashland on the 22nd.



COMMON REDPOLL sightings during the past week, separate from the Christmas 
Bird Counts, included 20 in Barnstead on December 26th, 80 in Jefferson on 
the 25th, 50 in Keene on the 23rd, 150 in Sandwich on the 23rd, and 60 in 
Ashland on the 22nd.



BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week, separate from the Christmas 
Bird Counts, included 50 in Thornton on December 26th, 40 in Barnstead on 
the 25th, and 80 in Claremont on the 23rd.



NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings during the past week, separate from the Christmas 
Bird Counts, included 1 in Hampton on December 26th, 1 in Rochester on the 
25th, and 1 in Tilton on the 22nd.



PINE GROSBEAKS sightings during the past week, separate from the Christmas 
Bird Counts, included 16 in Warren on December 27th, 11 in Epping on the 
25th, 11 in North Walpole on the 24th, 7 in Rochester on the 23rd, and 6 in 
Madison on the 22nd.



EVENING GROSBEAK sightings during the past week, separate from the Christmas 
Bird Counts, included a flock of 86 in Jefferson on December 25th, 12 in 
Mont Vernon on the 24th, and 8 in Claremont on the 22nd.



150 SNOW BUNTINGS, 550 HORNED LARKS, and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen near 
Chickering Road in Westmoreland on December 24th.



6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen at the Ashley Ferry boat landing in Claremont 
on December 23rd.



2 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen at Ragged Neck in Rye on December 24th.



Over 30 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen on the north side of Little Boar's Head 
in North Hampton on December 25th.



A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was reported from Mont Vernon on December 24th.



A hiker on the Crawford Path in Crawford Notch saw 7 GRAY JAYS on December 
26th.



A BOREAL CHICKADEE was reported from a feeder in Orange in December 24th.



A RUDDY DUCK, 3 LESSER SCAUP, 50 COMMON GOLDENEYES, and 50 HOODED MERGANSERS 
were seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on December 24th.



The Lee/Durham Christmas Bird Count was held on December 22nd. Highlights 
included:

A female NORTHERN PINTAIL in Rochester, an adult BLACK-HEADED GULL in 
Durham, single adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS in Dover, Rochester, and 
Newmarket, 11 ICELAND GULLS, 9 GLAUCOUS GULLS, a dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED 
HAWK in Barrington, a TURKEY VULTURE in Newmarket, 2 EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS in 
Dover, a GREAT HORNED OWL, 7 BARRED OWLS, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in 
Dover, 17 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, 28 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 3 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 
19 HORNED LARKS, 110 SNOW BUNTINGS, 327 COMMON REDPOLLS, 33 PINE GROSBEAKS, 
and 13 EVENING GROSBEAKS.



The Littleton Christmas Bird Count was held on December 23rd. Highlights 
included: 3 HOODED MERGANSERS, 4 COMMON MERGANSERS, 1 RED-BREASTED 
MERGANSER, 1 COOPERS HAWK, 1 MERLIN, 101 WILD TURKEYS, 1 BARRED OWL, 1 
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 1 NORTHERN FLICKER, 85 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, 13 
NORTHERN CARDINALS, 1 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, 122 PINE GROSBEAKS, 61 COMMON 
REDPOLLS, and 6 EVENING GROSBEAKS.
