This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, October 20th,
2010.
A GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was discovered at a private residence in Derry on
October 17th, and then seen there again on the 18th and 19th, but there was
no confirmed sighting on the 20th.
A WHITE-EYED VIREO was seen along Willow Avenue in North Hampton on October
16th.
A DICKCISSEL was seen at the Strafford County Farm in Dover on October 14th.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen along Causeway Road in Rye near Route 1A on
October 17th.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Frost Point in Odiorne Point State
Park in Rye on October 17th.
A male REDHEAD was seen on Jackman Pond in South Tamworth on October 17th.
It was associating with a flock of 100 RING-NECKED DUCKS.
A NORTHERN SHOVELERS, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 2
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 7 RUDDY DUCKS, and 52 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen at the
Exeter Whitewater Treatment Plant on October 17th.
2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported from the Rochester Wastewater Treatment
Facility on October 14th, and 12 RUDDY DUCKS were seen here on the 18th.
The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on
weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave.
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering
Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during
daylight hours.
A flock of 25 BRANT was reported flying near Pack Monadnock in Peterborough
on October 18th.
A BRANT and a RED-NECKED GREBE were reported from Lake Massabesic in Auburn
on October 19th.
4 HORNED GREBES and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER were seen on Newfound Lake on
October 18th.
22 RUDDY DUCKS, 10 HORNED GREBES, and a RED-NECKED GREBE were seen on Great
Bay on October 20th.
39 PIED-BILLED GREBES were reported from the Connecticut River in Hinsdale
on October 14th.
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on
October 16th.
A CAPE MAY WARBLER was seen near Little Boar's Head in North Hampton on
October 17th.
3 AMERICAN COOTS were seen on Eel Pond in Rye on October 17th.
A SNOW BUNTING was reported from Cherry Mountain Road in Carroll on October
15th.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 2 GRAY JAYS, and 8 BLACK SCOTERS were reported
from Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson during the past week.
A flock of 42 EVENING GROSBEAKS was seen in Groveton on October 13th.
An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL was heard at Sandy Point in Stratham on October 20th.
RAPTOR migration is under way with over 10,000 raptors already reported from
the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough since August
24th, including 2 GOLDEN EAGLES, 77 BALD EAGLES, and 50 PEREGRINE FALCONS.
The peak flight days were on September 18th, with over 3,400 raptors seen on
that day, and September 19th, with nearly 1,800 raptors seen then. Observers
have also been counting migrating raptors from the Carter Hill Raptor
Observatory in Concord with over 4,000 reported since September 1st,
including over 900 tallied on September 18th. Be sure to visit these
observatories this fall season to help out with the count and participate in
the excitement!
