This morning's Norwich walk in the nature area as arranged by the
Milton Frye Nature Area Committee yielded 28 bird species. Among
highlights were an American Woodcock in flight in full daylight,
singing Red-eyed Vireos, 7 species of warblers including a brightly
colored male Blackburnian Warbler, and a brilliant male Scarlet
Tanager. Other birds included a small number of low flying Canada
Geese passing by, an Eastern Kingbird, Tree Swallows, a Brown Creeper,
Carolina and House Wrens singing, and a calling Wood Thrush.

Following the walk in the nature area, a subset of the original band
of participants continued birding for another 2.5 hours with visits to
six Norwich sites by the water from Ledyard Bridge northward to Pompy
and Kendall Station Road. The 23 additional bird species found
included four species of ducks (with 4 Ring-necked Ducks still near
Pompy Farms), a Green Heron, a Spotted Sandpiper, Rough-winged and
Barn Swallows, Yellow and Chestnut-sided Warblers, and a female Rose-
breasted Grosbeak.

This morning several landbird species were especially sought but not
found. One of those, represented by a male and a female Indigo Bunting
together, appeared in the early afternoon here in the backyard in
Norwich village.
