Despite very high water this afternoon, I ran up to Pompy Flats (I'm
bound and determined to find a Great Egret there this year...). No
shorebirds at all, but the first cormorant I have ever seen there.

During late afternoon, I chased down a persistent begging call at the
edge of our woods in Norwich and found a juvenile Red-eyed Vireo not
long out of the nest, it's tail barely visible, still with many wisps of
down. In 1/2 hour, I never saw or heard adults, and I have not heard a
male singing nearby for almost 2 weeks. The species is not known to be
double-brooded in the Northeast, according to the Birds of North America
account, but this was surely a late nest.
