This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, January 13,
2010.
A possible adult-plumaged IVORY GULL was reported from Bicentennial Park in
Hampton on January 11th, but has not been relocated since then.
A possible second-winter-plumaged SLATY-BACKED GULL was seen at the
Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on January 7th but has not been
relocated. 2 ICELAND GULLS, and 2 AMERICAN PIPITS were also seen here on the
7th, and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and a female
NORTHERN PINTAIL were all seen here on the 8th. The treatment plant is gated
and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please
check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant
personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and
do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the
plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was again seen from the parking area south of the Yankee
Fisherman's Coop in Seabrook, and one was seen from Cross Beach Road in
Seabrook, both on January 12th. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the Derry Waste
Water Treatment Plant on January 8th, but has not been relocated. The plant
is closed Sunday and Monday and if you visit, please check in at the office.
A DOVEKIE was seen on the coast in Hampton on January 13th, and 27
RAZORBILLS and 3 BLACK GUILLEMOTS were seen along the coast on the 12th.
Over 125 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen behind the high school in Gorham on
January 10th. A flock of over 35 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen off of Route
110B in Milan, and a flock of 15 was seen off Route 16 in Berlin, all on
January 7th. At least 12 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in a flock of over 400
CEDAR WAXWINGS on the Plymouth State University campus in Holderness on
January 13th. At least 2 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in a flock of over 500
CEDAR WAXWINGS near the intersection of Pleasant Street and North Fruit
Street in Concord, on January 7th.
A flock of 50 EVENING GROSBEAKS was seen just south of the junction of
Routes 26 and 16 in Errol on January 7th.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen among a flock of SNOW BUNTINGS at Wallis Sands
in Rye on January 6th. 40 SNOW BUNTINGS and 24 HORNED LARKS were seen along
River Road in Westmoreland on January 9th. 20 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen at
Powdermill Pond in Peterborough on January 7th.
A "SOOTY" FOX SPARROW, a subspecies normally occurring near the Pacific
coast, is being regularly seen at a private home in Barrington, and was last
reported on January11th.
A gray-morph EASTERN SCREECH-OWL has been seen regularly along Route 1A in
Rye, roosting in a tree about 100-yards north of the entrance to Odiorne
Point State Park, and was last reported on January 9th.
2 pairs of GADWALLS were seen in South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on January
9th.
10 LESSER SCAUP were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on
January 9th.
A male NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in a Pond along Route 1A in Seabrook, and a
female NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in the Exeter Reservoir, all on January
9th.
5 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 7 HOODED MERGANSERS, and 2 COMMON MERGANSERS were
reported from the Connecticut River near Bellow's Falls and Plainfield on
January 9th.
An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen on the east side of Route 9 just north of
Hannaford's in Keene on January 9th, and one was seen in Hampton on January
10th.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen in Nashua on January 8th.
A WINTER WREN was seen again in the Southwest Park in Nashua on January 8th.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen at the Fransted Campground on Profile
Road in Franconia on January 4th.
