This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, August 20th, 
2018.



A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT was photographed on the Androscoggin River in Gorham 
on August 2nd, and was last reported on the 20th. The bird has been most 
commonly seen perched on orange safety buoys just above the Gorham 
Hydroelectric Station dam on Power House Road. This is also the site of the 
Gorham Transfer Station and there is signed River Access parking at the 
entrance, so park here and walk to the dam.



A WOOD STORK was located at the Pickering Ponds in Rochester on August 9th. 
It has been reported multiple times during the past week, and was most 
recently seen on the 19th. The bird has been most commonly seen in cattails 
located at the corner of the first pond closest to the entrance gate.



A pair of MISSISSIPPI KITES with a chick was seen in a nest near Madbury 
Road in Durham on July 26th, and was most recently reported on August 19th. 
To try to see the Durham birds, park at the Durham Town Library, walk out to 
the road and watch overhead for soaring KITES. Two additional nests, each 
with a chick being fed by 2 adult birds, were discovered in Newmarket and 
Stratham and were last reported on the 19th.



A WILSON’S PHALAROPE was seen at Little River Saltmarsh in North Hampton, 
and 4 WHIMBRELS were seen along the coast in Hampton, all on August 18th.



A MARBLED GODWIT was seen in Hampton Harbor on August 18th and 19th, and 3 
HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen briefly in coastal Hampton on the 20th but have 
not been relocated.



A BLACK TERN was seen in Hampton Harbor on August 15th.



An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen in coastal Rye on the August 17th, 
and 1 was seen in coastal North Hampton on the 18th(possibly the same bird). 
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen at Foss Beach in Rye on August 16th.



9 GREAT EGRETS were seen along the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on August 
14th, 1 was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Merrimack on the 19th, 1 was seen at 
Copps Pond in Tuftonboro on the 14th, and 1 was seen along the Sugar River 
in Newport on the 16th.



A BONAPARTE’S GULL was seen at Little Lake Sunapee on August 14th, and 2 
were seen at Lake Sunapee on the 17th.



A few WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported from the White Mountains, and 1 
was reported from Effingham, all during the past week.



A CAPE MAY WARBLER was seen in Keene on August 20th.



A RING-NECKED DUCK was seen at Powwow Pond in Kingston on August 17th.



Migrating COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported from several locations during the 
past week, with a high-count of 113 in Concord on August 18th.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Manchester on August 19th.



Birders on a Granite State Whalewatch cruise out of Rye Harbor on August 
18th reported seeing an ATLANTIC PUFFIN, a BLACK TERN, 4 CORY’S SHEARWATERS, 
25 GREAT SHEARWATERS, 25 NORTHERN GANNETS, and several WILSON’S 
STORM-PETRELS.
