This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for December 12, covering the period
December 5 - 11, 2008.  

 

The birding highlights of the week include a GREAT CORMORANT seen in Porter
Bay off Fort Cassin Road in Ferrisburg on 12/7; a juvenile GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE in Shelburne Bay on 12/8 and several SNOWY OWL
sightings, the most recent of which are: Dane Hill Road, West Charleston on
12/11 (1); south of the UVM athletic fields in Burlington on 12/11 (1);
Whiting ( 3 on 12/6, 1 on 12/11); and off Richville Road in Shoreham on 12/6
(1).

 

A RED-NECKED GREBE was spotted on Berlin Pond on 12/7.

 

A female NORTHERN PINTAIL was observed in Shelburne Bay on 12/11.  A
BLACK-SCOTER was seen on Lake Champlain in Panton on 12/7.

 

A first-winter ICELAND GULL was spotted in Kellogg's Bay off Fort Cassin
Road on 12/7.

 

A BELTED KINGFISHER was seen in Pittsford on 12/7.

 

Four RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS were sighted in Jericho on 12/6.

 

There were many CEDAR WAXWING sightings this week; the largest flocks were
in South Burlington (40) on 12/11 and in Norwich (210) on 12/8.

 

A CHIPPING SPARROW was seen in Brattleboro on 12/5 and 12/6.  A FIELD
SPARROW and a SAVANNAH SPARROW were seen behind the Marina Restaurant in
Brattleboro on 12/7.

 

Ten PINE GROSBEAKS were spotted in Lowell on 12/8.

 

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were observed in South Starksboro (4) on 12/5 and in
Hanksville (1) on 12/9.  A COMMON REDPOLL was seen near Kellogg Bay and in
Basin Harbor on 12/7.

 

There were numerous PINE SISKIN sightings this week, with the largest flock
(100) seen in Westminster on 12/5.
