This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, May 16th, 2016.



2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen flying over Newmarket on May 10th.



A pair of SANDHILL CRANES has returned to Monroe and one of them was seen on 
April 30th. The birds are most often seen in farm fields along Plains Road. 
If you look for the birds, please look from the road and do not enter the 
fields.



A CACKLING GOOSE was seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on May 15th.



A LEAST BITTERN was seen in Salem on May 11th.



3 AMERICAN BITTERNS were reported from Airport Marsh in Whitefield on May 
14th.



A SORA was reported from Geremonty marsh in Salem on May 10th.



A PIED-BILLED GREBE was reported from Lisbon on May 15th, 1 was heard in 
Durham on the 15th, and 1 was reported from Tufttonboro on the 14th.



2 RED KNOTS were seen in Hampton Marsh on May 12th.



3 PIPING PLOVERS were seen at Hampton Beach State Park on May 14th.



2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen at the Pease International Tradeport on May 
16th.



20 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen along the coast in North Hampton on May 14th.



A WILLET was spotted flying over Salem on May 10th.



A PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 13 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and 4 
LEAST SANDPIPERS were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on 
May 11th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 
7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be 
out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders 
to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at 
Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always 
open during daylight hours.



A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen at Lake Sunapee on 
May 13th.



2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on 
May 13th.



7 RED CROSSBILLS were seen in Whitefield on May 13th.



3 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Hancock on May 14th.



A CAPE MAY WARBLER was seen in Durham on May 10th, 1 was seen in Ashland on 
the 11th, 2 were seen in Hanover on the 11th, and 1 was seen in Jefferson on 
the 14th.



A BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was seen in Keene on May 10th, and 1 was seen in 
Jefferson on the 14th.



A TENNESSEE WARBLER was reported from Weare , and 1 was seen in Charlestown, 
both on May 14th.



2 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS were seen in Charlestown on May 13th.



There were a few possible sightings of CERULEAN WARBLER in the Connecticut 
River valley during the past week.



2 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS were seen at Pisgah State Park in Chesterfield on May 
13th, 1 was seen in Westmoreland on the 14th, 1 was seen in Hinsdale on the 
14th, and a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was heard in Weare on the 14th.



An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER and an ALDER FLYCATCHER were both reported from 
Creek Farm in Portsmouth on May 14th. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was reported 
from Kingston on the 15th. A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was reported from Landing 
Road in Hampton on May 13th.



2 PURPLE MARTINS were seen in Seabrook on May 13th.



ORCHARD ORIOLES were reported from Rochester, Dover, Nottingham, and Nashua 
during the past week.



A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen near Little Cherry Pond in Jefferson on 
May 14th.



A few WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were reported during the past week.



50 COMMON TERNS were seen along the coast in Rye on May 14th.



20 BANK SWALLOWS were seen at Horseshoe Pond in Merrimack on May 14th.



51 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 8 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 89 CHIMNEY SWIFTS, 29 CLIFF 
SWALLOWS, and 705 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES were counted migrating north along 
the coast on May 10th.



Spring arrivals reported during the past week included: LEAST FLYCATCHER, 
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, SWAINSON’S THRUSH, AMERICAN PIPIT, WILSON’S WARBLER, 
CANADA WARBLER, and INDIGO BUNTING.
