About a dozen hardy birdwatchers ventured to Bog Road in Enfield on
Wednesday night, and were rewarded with hearing several displaying
woodcock. Unfortunately, the overcast sky made it difficult to view the
displays, and the suitors remained hidden otherwise. Despite this, it
was a successful trip, what with two owls calling, snipe winnowing,
woodcock calling all around, and five or six Hermit Thrushes calling as
well. We will try again next year!

Birds of interest:

Canada Geese flying right over our heads

Wilson's Snipe - heard

American Woodcock - one seen briefly in display, otherwise heard

Barred Owl - heard

Hermit Thrush - heard at least five different individuals

White-throated Sparrow - heard

Song Sparrow - heard

Chipping Sparrow - heard

Owl (sp) - one of the owls simply gave a one-note hoot call. It is
probable that it was a lazy Barred Owl, but Great Horned would also be
possible. The hoot was long, close to the you-all call of the Barred
Owl, but never actually sounding like it. I've heard a one-note call
from Barred Owl before, and it always ended up sounding like the you-all
call. So, I'm not really sure what it was, and if anyone has any ideas,
please comment...thanks!
