This afternoon I walked the River Trail in Hanover, and I was pleasantly surprised to find three White-winged Scoters huddled together in the Connecticut River south of Ledyard Bridge. Soon after I spotted the birds, they took off, probably flushed by an approaching canoeist. They circled overhead several times, giving me good views, before heading northward over the river, apparently moving out for good.
