A seasonally late male Yellow-shafted Flicker briefly visited the
backyard here in Norwich village at mid day (Nov. 29). He landed on a
feeder containing sunflower seeds but quickly departed without any
feeding.
My only record from Norwich of this species later in the calendar year
was a flicker, also here in the backyard, during a Hanover-Norwich
Christmas Bird Count on December 26, 1994.
Other highlights among the 12 species seen here in the backyard today
included a Cooper's Hawk present for a short time in late afternoon,
an American Tree Sparrow, 2 White-throated Sparrows, a flock of at
least 11 Northern Cardinals (6 females and 5 males) present at dusk on
their way to roost, and one Evening Grosbeak.
