Early this afternoon (March 30) Ed Hack found at least 2 Bohemian
Waxwings among a flock of 30 or more waxwings around Foley Park in
Norwich by the Ledyard Bridge. After a phone call from Ed, I was
fortunate to arrive in time to see a Bohemian perched among a group of
Cedar Waxwings. The larger size and darker color of the underparts of
the Bohemian contrasted sharply with the smaller size and more
yellowish undersides of the Cedars. When last seen, in the rain, many
of the waxwings were perched in a tree along the south side of Route
10A between Montshire Drive and the railway overpass.

As far as known, this was the first sighting of Bohemian Waxwing in
Norwich during 2010.

My latest spring record of Bohemians in Norwich during previous years
was of two birds on May 5, 2000, following a winter season in which
Bohemians were plentiful here.

While at Foley Park this afternoon, Ed also found a male Common
Goldeneye and a pair of Mallards. The water level along that section
of the Connecticut River upstream from the Wilder Dam has been high
for the past few days.
