3 French Hens? No, 3 tom turkeys, roosting high in an oak tree.

We've had a group of 3 tom turkeys visiting the yard this winter, picking through some cracked corn we put out for the wildlife, as well as scattered bird seed under the bird feeders by the house. They always show up as the 3 amigos, separate from a flock of hens that occasionally visit.

Returning on snowshoes at dusk on Saturday from a hike up the Appalachian Trail on Elm Street in Norwich, VT, we were descending the steep hill down through some hardwoods directly up the fill from Spring Pond, when we spied the 3 toms roosting high up in a tree. We stopped to watch and our voices must have spooked them, because they took flight.

Never seen turkeys roosting at that height, at the top of the hardwood canopy.
