This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for October 10, covering the period
October 3 - 9, 2008.  

 

The birding highlights of the week include a ROSS'S GOOSE at the west end of
the Goose Viewing Area at Dead Creek on 10/6 and 10/7, a 1st year GOLDEN
EAGLE at Dead Creek on 10/3 and a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW foraging
with a small flock of swamp and song sparrows at Dead Creek on 10/5.

 

A RED-THROATED LOON was seen at Charlotte Town Beach on 10/4 and two were
spotted off Grand Isle on 10/5.

 

As of 10/10 there were 3,000 SNOW GEESE at Dead Creek and 2,000 CANADA
GEESE.

 

 All three scoters were observed in Vermont this past week:  SURF (2 at
Charlotte Town Beach on 10/4); WHITE-WINGED (3 at Charlotte Town Beach on
10/4, 6 on Grand Isle on 10/6) and BLACK (250 off Grand Isle on 10/6 and 1
in Brattleboro). 

 

A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was still visiting honeysuckle flowers in
Burlington on 10/5.

 

Three PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were seen and heard at Danby Pond on 10/5.

 

A lingering BANK SWALLOW was seen in Grand Isle on 9/9.
