This question was raised by friends who live on a hilltop, in the midst of extensive pastures, and are pretty good observers of the birds that come to their feeders. They have recently seen large flocks of a species new to them. They are familiar with goldfinches and pine siskins and are confident that what they are seeing is neither of these. Having seen snow buntings in their area in previous years, I suggested that as a possibility, but they then told me that these new birds, at least some of them, walk rather than hopping. This make me think "horned lark," but I don't think I've ever seen a report of winter horned larks in the Upper Valley. So my question really is whether horned larks are a possibility here in winter.
