This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for November 26, 2007 covering the
period November 19 - 25, 2007.
Highlights this week include a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE last seen on
Minard's Pond in Bellows Falls on 11/14, a TUNDRA SWAN seen on Lake
Champlain from the shores of Charlotte on 11/23, a male HARLEQUIN DUCK also
on Lake Champlain observed from Shelburne on 11/24, one JAEGER Sp. on Grand
Isle on 11/19 and a 1st year BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE in Charlotte on 11/23.
In addition to several above-mentioned birds, the following waterfowl were
seen during a day-long Champlain lake watch on 11/23: 2,500 SNOW GEESE, 35
GADWALL, 800 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 2,760 MALLARDS, 8 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 93
GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 1 SURF SCOTER. One GADWALL was also seen at
Brattleboro Retreat Meadows at the mouth of the West River on 11/25.
Two PEREGRINE FALCONS were observed in Rutland this week.
A late-migrating SPOTTED SANDPIPER was seen in Charlotte on 11/25.
Approximately 20,000 RING-NECKED GULLS were seen in Charlotte on 11/23.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was spotted on 11/19 in Grand Isle.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was observed in West Brattleboro on 11/21.
NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen in Jericho, Weybridge, West Brattleboro,
Brattleboro Retreat Meadows, North Ferrisburg, Herrick's Cove (2) and near
Bridport (2) this week.
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS continue to be sighted in good numbers: 11/19 -Poultney
(2), Woodstock (25) and Norwich (32); 11/20 -Newport (23), Norwich (25);
11/21 -Newport (78+), 11/23 -Shoreham (36), 11/24 -Bridport (125), Norwich
(48); 11/25 - Charlotte (75) and Thetford Center. Seventy CEDAR WAXWINGS
were observed in Norwich on 11/20.
Six YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were seen in Grand Isle on 11/20.
PINE GROSBEAK SIGHTINGS were even more numerous this week than last; they
were observed in Waitsfield, Moretown, Underhill, North Bennington,
Pittsford, Poultney, Vergennes, Ira, West Brattleboro, Rutland Town, South
Burlington, Brandon, Derby, Rutland, Richmond, Jericho, Norwich, Plainfield,
Cornwall, New Haven, Grout Pond, Charlotte, Montpelier and Proctor.
Seven RED CROSSBILLS were spotted in North Bennington on 11/24.
COMMON REDPOLLS were seen in Shelburne (30 - 40), Bridport (100), West
Brattleboro (2), Killington (1), Shoreham (1), Addison (2), Charlotte (50),
North Bennington (2), Grand Isle (30), Norwich (30), Brattleboro (15),
Brandon (1) and Waitsfield (25) this week.
Two EVENING GROSBEAKS were sighted in Ira on 11/21 and 4 in Moretown on
11/24.
