This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, March 26th,
2009. 

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, a NORTHERN HARRIER, 58 SNOW GEESE, 3 NORTHERN
PINTAILS, 2 AMERICAN WIGEONS, and 2 KILLDEER were seen at Great Meadows in
Charlestown on March 19th and 20th. The ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and 7 NORTHERN
PINTAILS were reported here on the 22nd.

A CACKLING GOOSE, 10 SNOW GEESE, 1,000 CANADA GEESE, 3 GADWALL, 5 AMERICAN
WIGEONS, and 7 GREEN-WINGED TEALS were seen on and around Lake Wantastiquet
in Hinsdale on March 20th. 

A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was seen on the south side of Great Boar’s Head
in Hampton on March 22nd.

1,000 GREATERE SCAUP were reported from Great Bay on March 25th. 6 LESSER
SCAUP and 1 GREATER SCAUP were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment
Plant on March 22nd.

A PIED-BILLED GREBE, 4 NORTHERN PINTAILS, and 350 RING-NECKED DUCKS were
seen on Powwow Pond in Kingston on March 21st.

A PIED-BILLED GREBE and 93 RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen on World’s End Pond
in Salem on March 26th.

2 NORTHERN PINTAILS were seen at Bodwell Farm in Kingston on March 22nd.

68 RING-NECKED DUCKS and 42 WOOD DUCKS were seen at the Deer Hill Wildlife
Management Area in Brentwood on March 25th.

40 WOOD DUCKS were seen in the fields behind the Post Office on Loudon Road
in Concord on March 21st.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on
March 22nd. 

A GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from Hampton Harbor on March 22nd.

An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Pickering Ponds in Rochester on March 25th.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the tree nursery located on Intervale Road in
Canterbury on March 22nd, and one was seen at the sand pits in Surry on the
21st.
 
A HOARY REDPOLL was also reported from Rochester on the 22nd.

4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported from Exeter on March 22nd.

100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in a tree nursery on Intervale Road in
Canterbury on March 22nd.

3 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen on Hammond Hollow Road in Gilsum on March
25th.

A FISH CROW was reported from the Winnipesauke River behind BJ’s in Tilton
on March 24th. 

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen on Bog Road in Penacook on March 22nd.

A TREE SWALLOW was seen on Great Bay on March 22nd.

An EASTERN PHOEBE was seen in Madison on March 26th.

3 FIELD SPARROWS were reported from Nashua on March 22nd.

Migrating waterfowl are arriving, advancing as the ice melts on the rivers
and lakes. Species being reported from inland sites include: CANADA GEESE,
WOOD DUCKS, AMERICAN WIGEON, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCKS, GREATER
SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEADS, COMMON GOLDENEYES, HOODED MERGANSERS, and
COMMON MERGANSERS.

There have been scattered sightings of WILSON’S SNIPE, KILLDEER, AMERICAN
WOODCOCKS, RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, PINE SISKINS, COMMON REDPOLLS,
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, SNOW BUNTINGS, HORNED LARKS, TURKEY VULTURES,
EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, COMMON GRACKLES, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, and FOX
SPARROWS from coastal and inland sites during the past week.
