During observations in the late daylight hours today from the grassy lawn area of Kilowatt Park South in the Wilder section of Hartford, VT, at least 35 Common Nighthawks were seen flying northward over Wilder village west of the railroad tracks. All but two birds were seen between 6:25 and my departure time at 7:06 PM. The largest number of birds in view at any one time was 16 about 7:01 PM. Some birds appeared to be flying as lone individuals while others seemed to be in loose flocks. No birds were detected over the Connecticut River.

It was unexpected to find so many birds heading northward, opposite to the generally anticipated southward direction for the season, and that the birds were passing over the village rather than flying closer to the nearby river.

George Clark
Norwich, VT
