This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, January 6, 
2010.



A SNOWY OWL was seen from Route 1A in Seabrook in the dunes north of Route 
286 on January 2nd.



A gray-morph EASTERN SCREECH-OWL has been seen regularly along Route 1A in 
Rye, roosting in a tree about 100-yards north of the entrance to Odiorne 
Point State Park, and was last reported on January 5th.



3 RAZORBILLS were seen along the coast in New Castle on January 4th.



A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE has been seen regularly off of the north side of 
Great Boar's Head in Hampton and was last reported on January 3rd. A female 
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE has been seen several times off of Route 1A in Rye 
opposite a large stone "angel" statue, and 2 BARROW'S GOLDENEYES were 
reported from the south side of Great Boar's Head on January 1st.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Surry behind the town hall in the gravel pit 
area, and one was seen at a private residence in Chatham both on January 
2nd, and one was seen at Green Wagon Farm in Keene on January 1st.



A sub-adult GLAUCOUS GULL was seen from the parking area south of the Yankee 
Fisherman's Coop in Seabrook on January 2nd.



An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on January 
3rd.



An ICELAND GULL, a female NORTHERN PINTAIL, and an AMERICAN PIPIT were all 
seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant during the past few days. A 
light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was also seen in the area. The treatment plant 
is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, 
please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant 
personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and 
do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the 
plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on a street lamp in front of Veteran's Memorial 
Park in Manchester on January 6th.



An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen on the east side of Route 9 just north of 
Hannaford's in Keene on January 5th, and one was seen on Island Path in 
Hampton on January 1st.



3 BALD EAGLES were seen in Chatham, and 2 were seen in Lebanon, all on 
December 30th.



Up to 4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS have been reported from the coast during the past 
week, mainly from Hampton Beach State Park in Hampton, or Cross Beach Road 
in Seabrook. They are often found in the company of SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED 
LARKS.



Good numbers of SNOW BUNTINGS were reported during the past week, with 20 on 
the ice on Great Bay as seen from Sandy Point in Stratham, 75 at Odiorne 
Point State Park in Rye, 45 in the marsh located west of Wallis Sands in 
Rye, 20 at Runnymede Farm in North Hampton, and 80 at Hampton Beach State 
Park, all on January 4th. Also, at least 26 were seen in a gravel pit in 
Walpole located on Route 12 just north of the border with Westmoreland on 
December 29th, and some were reported from the Concord and Laconia Christmas 
Bird Counts.



A "SOOTY" FOX SPARROW, a subspecies normally occurring near the Pacific 
coast, is being regularly seen at a private home in Barrington, and was last 
reported on January 5th. A "RED" FOX SPARROW was seen in Hancock on January 
1st.



A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen at a private home in Nashua on January 6th.



A FIELD SPARROW was seen at Green Wagon Farm in Keene on January 1st.



An "IPSWICH" SAVANNAH SPARROW was seen off of Cross Beach Road in Seabrook 
on January 3rd.



A RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS were seen in Nashua on 
January 1st.



A WINTER WREN was seen in the Southwest Park in Nashua on January 5th.



12 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were seen at a feeder in Exeter on January 3rd, and 
2 were seen at a feeder in East Kingston on the 2nd.



A GREAT BLUE HERON was seen on the Ashuelot River in Keene on January 3rd.



The annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count period has finished. Highlights from 
two counts follow:



The Concord Christmas Bird Count was held on January 3rd. Highlights 
included: 109 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 2 HOODED MERGANSERS, a GREAT BLUE HERON, 
at least 3 BALD EAGLES, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, 5 CAROLINA WRENS, 9 
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, a GRAY CATBIRD, over 1,400 CEDAR 
WAXWINGS, a CHIPPING SPARROW, 3 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 63 WHITE-THROATED 
SPARROWS, 950 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, 15 SNOW BUNTINGS, a PURPLE FINCH, and a RED 
CROSSBILL.



The Laconia Christmas Bird Count was held on January 2nd. Highlights 
included: a female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE in the Winnipesaukee River above Route 
140, 2 GREATER SCAUP, 3 COMMON LOONS, 106 WILD TURKEYS, 783 AMERICAN CROWS, 
2 MERLINS, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, an EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 
37 AMERICAN ROBINS, and 5 SNOW BUNTINGS.
