This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, November 22nd,
2007.
An EARED GREBE was found at Seal Rocks in Rye on November 17th, and was
reported again on the 18th and the 21st. This is the same location at which
an EARED GREBE spent most of last winter.
A drake EURASIAN WIGEON was seen on Great Bay on November 18th.
A possible CAVE SWALLOW was seen at Bicentennial Park in Hampton on November
17th. While CAVE SWALLOW seems most likely, the observer could not rule out
CLIFF SWALLOW as a possibility. 3 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were also seen here.
A CACKLING GOOSE was seen among a flock of about 500 CANADA GEESE in a field
on the west side of Route 4 just south of the state line and north of Dover
in Rollinsford. Also present was a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen in the dunes at Hampton Beach State Park on
November 21st. A red-morph EASTERN SCREECH-OWL was seen at a residence on
Portsmouth Avenue in Greenland on the 18th.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at the Trails at Pickering Ponds off of
Pickering Road in Rochester on November 16th. 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS,
and 3 ICELAND GULLS were seen here on the 21st.
2 BLACK-HEADED GULLS, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, a GLAUCOUS GULL, and an
ICELAND GULL, were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on
November 16th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are
7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be
out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders
to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at
Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always
open during daylight hours.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at the Durham Town Landing on November
21st.
A drake NORTHERN SHOVELER was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment
Facility on November 18th.
A possible HOARY REDPOLL was seen among a flock of over 100 COMMON REDPOLLS
feeding in birch trees located opposite Birch Street on Clinton Street in
Concord on November 19th. A flock of 22 COMMON REDPOLLS was seen in Hinsdale
on the 18th, and a flock of 50 was reported from River Road in Stratham on
the 17th. In addition, there have been scattered sightings of smaller
numbers during the past week.
BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS have been reported from several locations during the past
week, including over 200 on the Plymouth State University grounds by Rounds
Hall (clock tower visible from Main Street) on November 21st, 20 near the
Gibson Center in North Conway on the 19th, 46 in Etna on the 18th, and over
35 behind the Rumney Post Office on the 15th.
NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings continue with 7 since the last Rare Bird Alert,
including 1 in Dover on the 21st, single birds in Concord, Durham, and
Swanzey on the 19th, single birds in Surry, and Greenland on the 18th, and 1
in Francestown on the 17th.
PINE GROSBEAKS were reported from many locations during the past week,
including 16 on Island Road in Harrisville, on November 19th, a group at the
NH Audubon Willard Pond Sanctuary in Antrim on the 19th, 7 in Surry on the
18th, and 13 on Route 25 in Wentworth on the 17th. In addition, there have
been scattered sightings of small numbers during the past week.
EVENING GROSBEAK sightings are increasing with flocks of over 30 in
Jefferson, and 9 in Harrisville on the 21st. In addition, there have been
scattered sightings of small numbers during the past week.
Over 100 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen along the coast on the 18th. In addition,
there have been scattered sightings of smaller numbers during the past week.
A female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen along Bog Road in Penacook on
November 18th. This is the second BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER seen in the
southern part of the state during this fall season.
A GRAY JAY was seen at Mud Pond Bog in Jefferson on November 21st.
6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen on Landing Road in Hampton on November
17th.
An OSPREY was seen on Wilson Pond in Swanzey on November 17th. Also present
were 62 COMMON MERGANSERS.
250 GREATER SCAUP, over 100 AMERICAN WIGEON, 7 RUDDY DUCKS, and over 3,000
CANADA GEESE were seen on Great Bay on November 21st.
