This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, April 2nd, 2018.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen near Eagle Cliff in Franconia Notch on March 31st.
A SNOWY OWL was seen at Rye Harbor State Park on April 1st.
A BLACK VULTURE continued to be seen in the Connecticut River valley during
the past week and was reported from Walpole on March 28th, and Charlestown
on the 31st. A possible BLACK VULTURE was reported from Somersworth on the
31st. 35 TURKEY VULTURES were seen in Exeter on March 27th, and 35 were seen
in Nashua on the 28th.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen near the Sky Valley Motel along Route 302
in Bartlett on March 28th.
Birders on a boat cruise to Jeffrey’s Ledge saw a NORTHERN FULMAR and a
COMMON MURRE offshore on March 31st. 7 RAZORBILLS were seen in coastal Rye
waters on March 31st.
An ICELAND GULL was seen in Berlin in the Bridge Street area near the
Androscoggin River on March 26th. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the Seabrook
side of Hampton Harbor on March 31st. A BONAPARTE’S GULL was seen on the
Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March 30th.
51 SNOW GEESE were seen at Sherman Farm in Conway on March 31st, and 40 were
seen near the Connecticut River in Lancaster on April 1st.
A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was seen on the Androscoggin River in Errol on
March 28th.
Water birds reported during the past week included: a RED-NECKED GREBE on
the Merrimack River in Concord on March 29th, a BLACK SCOTER on the Sugar
River in Newport on the 30th, 4 GADWALL on Wilson Pond in Keene on the 31st,
7 NORTHERN PINTAILS on Powder Mill Pond in Hancock on the 30th, 2 NORTHERN
PINTAILS and 2 AMERICAN WIGEONS in Charlestown on the 31st, a BLUE-WINGED
TEAL on Eel Pond in Rye on the 28th, 2 LESSER SCAUP in Cornish on the 30th,
a GREATER SCAUP in Hinsdale on the 31st,and a COMMON LOON on Pawtuckaway
Lake on April 1st.
There were a few inland sightings of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS reported
during the past week.
30 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen at Ragged Neck in Rye on March 30th.
A WILSON’S SNIPE was reported from Hanover on March 29th, and 1 was seen in
Durham on April 1st.
2 GREAT EGRETS were seen along the coast, and an AMERICAN BITTERN was seen
at the Dillant-Hopkins Airport in Swanzey, all on March 31st.
4 PINE GROSBEAKS were reported from the Tuckerman Ravine Trail on Mount
Washington on March 27th.
9 RED CROSSBILLS were reported from Lempster, and a few more were reported
from Hillsboro, and Hanover all during the past week. 7 WHITE-WINGED
CROSSBILLS were reported from Crawford Notch in the White Mountains on March
28th.
PEREGRINE FALCONS were reported from Franconia Notch, Manchester, Walpole,
and Epping, and a few MERLINS and AMERICAN KESTRELS were reported from
scattered locations, all during the past week.
An OSPREY was reported from Newington on March 28th, and 1 was seen in
Bridgewater on April 1st.
An AMERICAN PIPIT was seen in Seabrook on April 1st.
An EASTERN MEADOWLARK was seen in Warren on March 27th, and 1 was seen in
Charlestown on the 31st.
A few returning EASTERN PHOEBES were reported during the past week from
Nashua, Barrington, Concord, Haverhill, Etna, Holderness, Ashland, Hancock,
and Hillsborough.
An estimated 150 TREE SWALLOWS were reported from the Salmon Falls River in
Rollinsford on March 31st, over 40 were seen on Heron Pond in Milford on
April 2nd, and smaller numbers were reported from Merrimack, Rye, Hinsdale,
Holderness, Hopkinton, Charlestown, and Seabrook during the past week.
A few FISH CROWS were reported from Nashua, Keene, and Hampton during the
past week.
A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was reported from Plymouth on March 31st, and a
FIELD SPARROW was reported from Concord on April 2nd.
4 FOX SPARROWS were seen in Hopkinton on March 27th, 1 was seen in Newington
on the 28th, and 1 was seen in Richmond on April 2nd.
A PALM WARBLER was seen in Westmoreland on April 1st, and 1 was seen in
Rochester on the 2nd. A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was seen in Hollis on March
28th, and 1 was seen in Rochester on April 2nd.
An EASTERN TOWHEE was reported from Wilton on March 31st, 2 HERMIT THRUSHES
were seen in Hinsdale on the 29th, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen in Haverhill
on April 1st, and a WINTER WREN was seen in Jefferson on April 1st.
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was reported from Gilsum on March 30th, 1 was
reported from Boscawen on the 31st, and 1 was reported from Nottingham on
April 1st.
5 NORTHERN FLICKERS were reported from a residence in Litchfield on April
2nd.
