This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, December 18th, 
2008.



A KING EIDER was seen from Bicentennial Park in Hampton on December 14th.



A first-winter THAYER'S GULL, a possible second/third-winter SLATY-BACKED 
GULL, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and 8 ICELAND GULLS were 
all seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on December 16th. The 
treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on 
weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the 
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. 
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering 
Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during 
daylight hours.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale, and one was 
seen in Hampton Harbor, both on December 13th. 4 ICELAND GULLS were reported 
from along the coast on December 14th, and 5 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were 
seen along the coast on the 12th.



3-4 SNOWY OWLS are being seen regularly on the coast and have been reported 
from near Pulpit Rocks and Ragged Neck in Rye, from Little Boar's Head in 
North Hampton, from Hampton Beach State Park, and on a house roof along 
Route 286 in Seabrook.



A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continues to be seen from Great Boar's Head in 
Hampton, and was last reported on December 16th, as well as 3 RAZORBILLS and 
a BLACK GUILLEMOT.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Westmoreland Road in Westmoreland on December 
14th, and one was reported from Nelson on the 11th.



A few BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen mixed in with a flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS on 
South Park Street in Hanover on December 17th.



A CACKLING GOOSE (seen on Silver Lake in Tilton), a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, a 
WOOD DUCK, over 200 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, a PINE GROSBEAK, an EVENING 
GROSBEAK, 9 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, a CAROLINA WREN, and a few NORTHERN 
SHRIKES were highlights from the Laconia Christmas Bird Count held on 
December 14th.



26 COMMON REDPOLLS, 39 PINE GROSBEAKS, 25 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 11 
EVENING GROSBEAKS, 2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, 3 BOREAL CHICKADEES, a GRAY 
JAY, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (first for the count!), and a CAROLINA WREN 
were highlights of the Littleton Christmas Bird Count held on December 14th.



Over 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, a few PINE GROSBEAKS, a few WHITE-WINGED 
CROSSBILLS, 3 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, a number of BOREAL CHICKADEES, 
several GRAY JAYS, 2 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, and 5 BALD EAGLES were found on the 
Errol Christmas Count held on December 17th.



Over 30 EVENING GROSBEAKS, over 10 PINE GROSBEAKS, a few WHITE-WINGED 
CROSSBILLS, a BOHEMIAN WAXWING, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, a number of BOREAL 
CHICKADEES, several GRAY JAYS, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 3 RING-NECKED PHEASANTS, 
and a CANADA GOOSE (new for the count!) were recorded in the Pittsburg 
Christmas Bird Count held on December 16th.



A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen at Centerra Park on Lebanon on December 
17th, and one was seen on Blueberry Hill in Hanover on December 12th.



A PINE WARBLER was seen coming to a bird feeder in Pittsfield on December 
13th.

A PALM WARBLER and 2 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen in Rye on December 14th.

An EASTERN TOWHEE was seen in North Conway on December 12th.



A NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW and a SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW were 
seen in Hampton Marsh on December 12th.



There have been scattered sightings of PURPLE SANDPIPERS, RAZORBILLS, and 
BLACK GUILLEMOTS along the coast during the past week, and there have also 
been scattered sightings of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, SNOW BUNTINGS and 
HORNED LARKS from coastal and inland sites during the past week.
