I had a strange encounter this evening at ~6:30 pm. While talking to a
neighbor on Pine Tree Road in Norwich, I was surprised to hear the
unmistakable call of a Herring Gull overhead. I looked up and saw what
I can only describe as a kettle of 18 gulls, soaring ~150 feet above the
ground, drifting slowly north. One or two birds called several times -
I felt as if I was on the coast of ME or MA. The light was poor, and I
wouldn't have been able to confidently identify the birds if not for
their calling. I looked carefully for size differences, but there were
none, so I'm confident all were Herring Gulls.
I assume the birds were migrating northward...
