This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, April 13th,
2011.
A BLACK VULTURE was seen in Exeter on April 12th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along Krif Road in Keene on April 11th.
An immature BLACK-HEADED GULL, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and an immature
ICELAND GULL, were all seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on
April 7th, and 7 OSPREY were seen here on the 8th. The treatment plant is
gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit,
please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant
personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and
do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the
plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and an adult LAUGHING GULL were both seen
in Moore Fields along Route 155A in Durham on April 13th, and previously at
the dairy barn in Durham on the 11th.
An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Frost Point in Odiorne Point
State Park in Rye on April 10th.
An ICELAND GULL, a NORTHERN SHOVELER, and 12 LESSER SCAUP were seen at the
Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on April 12th.
29 SNOW GEESE were seen on Great Bay on April 12th, 9 were reported from
Strafford on the 9th, 24 were seen in Mascoma on the 7th, 6 were seen in
Enfield on the 7th, and 20 were seen in South Lancaster on the 7th.
A REDHEAD was seen on Great Bay with about 500 GREATER SCAUP on April 9th.
2 GADWALL were reported from Great Meadows in Charlestown on April 9th.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER was reported from South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on April
12th, 1 was seen on the Merrimack River in Nashua on the 11th, and 4 were
seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on the 8th.
2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on April
10th, and one was seen in Swanzey on the 9th.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen in Turtle Pond in Concord on April 12th, 3 were
seen on the Connecticut River in West Lebanon on the 11th, and one was seen
on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on the 9th.
A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED (COMMON) TEAL was seen several times during the past
week in Meadow Pond in Hampton. Also present have been over 300 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, up to 5 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and a NORTHERN SHOVELER.
A BLACK GUILLEMOT continues to be seen in Rye Harbor.
A GREAT CORMORANT was seen on the Merrimack River in Penacook on April 10th.
4 NORTHERN GANNETS were seen along the coast on April 9th.
2 GLOSSY IBIS were seen in Greenland on April 9th, and 7 SNOWY EGRETS were
seen in coastal Rye on April 11th.
A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen in Hampton on April 10th.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen at Runnymede Farm in North Hampton on
April 9th, and one was reported from the Lakes Region on April 11th.
A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was seen in Hampton on April 9th.
4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen at a birdfeeder along Route 1A in Rye on
April 10th, and 1 was seen at a feeder in Lyme on the 11th.
2 HOARY REDPOLLS was reported from Strafford on April 8th.
Over 450 COMMON REDPOLLS were reported during the past week, including:
30 in Madison on April 13th, 100 in Jefferson on the 10th, 80 in Lyme Center
on the 9th, 25 in Penacook on the 9th, 20 in Hancock on the 9th, 17 in
Effingham on the 9th, 100 in Wolfeboro on the 8th, and 100 in Strafford on
the 8th.
136 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Merrimack on April 13th, 2 were seen in
Nashua on the 13th, 182 were tallied in Penacook on the 10th, and 10 were
seen in Durham on the 10th.
35 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in North Barnstead, and 2 were seen in
Effingham, all on April 9th.
3 VIRGINIA RAILS were reported from Portsmouth, and 1 was reported from
North Hampton, all on April 12th.
An AMERICAN PIPIT was seen in Hancock on April 11th.
There was an unconfirmed report of a SHORT-EARED OWL at Woodmont Orchards in
Hollis on April 8th.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was reported from Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge in
Jefferson on April 10th.
FISH CROWS were reported from Concord, Hinsdale, Hampton, and Tilton during
the past week.
Inland sightings of waterfowl during the past week included: PIED-BILLED
GREBES, WOOD DUCKS, RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, HOODED MERGANSERS, COMMON
MERGANSERS, RING-NECKED DUCKS, AMERICAN WIGEONS, BUFFLEHEADS, COMMON
GOLDENEYE, GREATER and LESSER SCAUP, and GREEN-WINGED TEAL.
Early returning migrants during the past week included: LESSER and GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED and BARN SWALLOWS, RUBY CROWNED KINGLETS,
HERMIT THRUSHES, SONG and SAVANNAH SPARROWS, RUSY BLACKBIRDS, PINE WARBLERS,
PALM WARBLERS, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.
There also were reports of OSPREYS, NORTHERN HARRIERS, AMERICAN KESTRELS,
PEREGRINE FALCONS, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, TREE SWALLOWS, EASTERN
PHOEBES, WILSON'S SNIPES. AMERICAN WOODCOCKS, KILLDEER, HORNED LARKS,
EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, COMMON GRACKLES, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS, FOX SPARROWS, CHIPPING SPARROWS, and TURKEY VULTURES during the
past week.
