This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, October 10th,
2016.
A WHITE-EYED VIREO was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on October
8th.
2 DICKCISSELS were reported from Greeley Park in Nashua on October 6th.
A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from Rye Harbor State Park on October 9th.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and a LAUGHING GULL were both seen in coastal Rye
on October 8th.
A birder aboard the Granite State Whale Watch cruise out of Rye Harbor
reported a NORTHERN FULMAR, a CORY’S SHEARWATER, and numerous GREAT
SHEARWATERS and NORTHERN GANNETS on October 8th.
A EURASIAN WIGEON was seen in the southeast part of Great Bay on September
23rd and 28th, and again on October 7th.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER and a RUDDY DUCK were seen at the Exeter Wastewater
Treatment Plant on October 8th.
6 AMERICAN WIGEONS, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, a BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a SORA, 2 MARSH
WRENS, and over 70 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were reported from World End Pond in
Salem on October 5th.
2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 3 SURF SCOTERS, 4 BLACK SCOTERS, 5 PIED-BILLED
GREBES, 2 HORNED GREBES, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES, a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, 2
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 8 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, and 12 PALM WARBLERS were seen
at Cherry Pond in the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on
October 9th.
2 SURF SCOTERS, and 6 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on Lake Potanipo in Brookline,
and a flock of BLACK SCOTERS was seen on May Pond in Pillsbury State Park,
all on October 10th.
A flock of 22 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS was seen from Pack Monadnock in
Peterborough on October 3rd, and 2 possible SURF SCOTERS were seen at Boston
Lot Lake in Lebanon on October 9th.
There was an unconfirmed sighting of 2 SANDHILL CRANES from Franconia during
the past week.
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen in Hampton Marsh on October 3rd, and a
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported from North Hampton on the 10th.
An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen at Mill Pond in Durham on October 8th.
51 GREAT EGRETS were counted in Hampton Harbor on October 10th, and a SNOWY
EGRET was seen at Meadow Pond in Hampton on the 7th.
A STILT SANDPIPER was seen in Hampton Marsh on October 8th.
2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were reported from Eel Pond in Rye on October 10th.
A WHIMBREL was seen along the coast on October 4th.
A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, and 2 LEAST SANDPIPERS were seen at the Rochester
Wastewater Treatment Plant on October 7th. The treatment plant is gated and
the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check
in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do
not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block
the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not
gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen in New London on October 4th.
9 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and 40 AMERICAN PIPITS were reported from Sherman Farms
in East Conway on October 6th.
A HORNED LARK was seen near the summit of Mount Lafayette in the White
Mountains on October 8th.
There were several reports of late-migrating RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS
during the past week, with the latest on October 7th.
A small number of WOOD WARBLERS were reported during the past week,
including PRAIRIE WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, and BLACKPOLL WARBLER.
RAPTOR migration is under way with migrating raptors being counted daily at
the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, including
12,523 raptors tallied since September 1st, and at the Carter Hill
Observatory in Concord, including 6,213 raptors counted (2 of which were
GOLDEN EAGLES) since September 1st. Be sure to visit these New Hampshire
Audubon staffed observatories this fall season to help out with the counts!
