This is a reminder that Ben Steele is to present an illustrated program on "Behavior of the Common Eider: Darwinian Puzzles" at 7 PM on Monday April 9, 2018, in the Mayer Room of the Howe Library in Hanover, NH. This program, arranged by the Mascoma Chapter of New Hampshire Audubon, is free and open to the public.
Groups of eiders seen along the coast might look like unsophisticated flocks, but careful examination reveals surprisingly complicated decision making, interaction between individuals, and even different personalities. Many of these behaviors at first glance do not appear to enhance reproduction or survival, hence represent “Darwinian Puzzles”.
