The 1st Annual Family "Big Day" May 24, 2009

We own a cabin in northeastern VT, deep into the north woods, on a small
pond. Quiet, good birds.
Now this is a casual adventure. Not everyone is really "into" birds, but
heck it is a family adventure.
We wandered numerous dirt roads, and finally ended up at Moose Bog and the
airport in Island Pond.

64 species. Highlights:
*1 Male Am Woodcock..he crossed the dirt rd in front of us strutting, this
cool shuffle step, each step.
2 Gray Jays. we cheat. we put out good peanuts etc and they come to our
porch. Sweet and special.
1 Osprey
1 F Hoodie
1 each Red-tail and Broad-wing
1 M Northern Harrier
1 Ruffed Grouse, drumming
1 Spotted Sa.
Ruby-throated Hummers
1 Be Kingfisher
Yellow-b Saps, 1 Black-b Woodpecker, No. Flickers
Yellow-bellied, Alder, Least Flycatchers, Ea Phoebes
Blue-headed and Red-eyed Vireos
Winter Wrens :~)
numerous Ruby and Golden-crowned Kinglets, esp at Moose Bog
Swainson's, Veery, and Hermit Thrushes
And warblers: best was the all day Magnolia. He sang all day (sun and mon)
in the cabin dooryard. And
even said his "miss-miss miss-you" as we paddled away. Sweet.

Nashville, No Parula, Yellow, Ch-nut-sided, Black-thr Blue and Green,
Blackburnian (even around the
cabin), Palm, Blackpoll, BAW, Am Redstart, Ovenb, No Waterthrushes, Co
Yellowthr, Canada (a few good looks). No Bay-breasted or Cape Mays.
Song, Swamp, White-thr, and Chipping Sp. No Lincoln's.
No R-b Grosbeaks or Tanagers (have to come home for those).

Now to make a Bird-a-Thon donation in honor of our Big Day.

Bill Shepard and family.
