This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for May 12, 2008 covering the period May
5 - 11, 2008.  (* = First of year sightings)

 

The highlights of the week were two GLOSSY IBIS sightings on 5/11, one at
Cornwall Swamp WMA and one in Salisbury along Creek Road; a BLACK VULTURE
along Rte. 15 in Jeffersonville on 5/7; a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER* in
Ferrisburg at the junction of Little Chicago and Hawkins Roads; a CASPIAN
TERN on 5/9 on Grand Isle and on 5/11 at Delta Park; an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER* was seen along the railroad tracks south from Coventry Station Road
in South Coventry on 5/10 and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW* was spotted in Moretown
on 5/9.

 

There were several GREAT EGRET sightings this week, including 1 at Kingsland
Bay State Park (5/5), one at Delta Park (5/11), one at Brilyea Access at
Dead Creek WMA (5/11) and 3 at Gross Pointe on 5/11.

 

A NORTHERN SHOVELER was seen at Grosse Pointe on 5/11.

 

A GOLDEN EAGLE was spotted in Danby on 5/10, the second sighting of a GOLDEN
EAGLE in Danby within a week.         

 

A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER* was observed at Dead Creek on 5/11.  SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS* are back, with the first sighting taking place at Bristol Pond
on 5/6.  A PECTORAL SANDPIPER* was spotted at Dead Creek on 5/9.  Four LEAST
SANDPIPERS* were seen in Brattleboro on 5/6, 4 in Brattleboro on 5/9 and
approximately 100 at Dead Creek on 5/11.

 

RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS* have returned, with the first of many sightings
occurring in West Brattleboro, Rutland Town and Richmond on 5/5.

 

Two ALDER FLYCATCHERS* were seen on 5/5 and 5/9 at Woodside Park in Essex,
as well as one on 5/7.  A WILLOW FLYCATCHER* was spotted at Herrick's Cove
on 5/8.  The first of many GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS* returned this week in
Hartland on 5/5.  

 

 

GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS* were seen in East Monkton (5/8), Rutland Town (5/8),
and Brandon (5/11) this week.  A TENNESSEE WARBLER* was spotted at Boardman
Hill in West Rutland on 5/10.  CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER* sightings were
numerous, with the first sighting in Rupert on 5/6. CAPE MAY WARBLERS* were
sighted at Brilyea Access, Dead Creek WMA (2 on 5/9, 2 on 5/10, 1 on 5/11).
Six PRAIRIE WARBLERS* were observed in West Rutland on 5/10.  AMERICAN
REDSTARTS* returned throughout the state, with the earliest sightings in
Saxton's River and Mt. Philo on 5/7.  CANADA WARBLERS* were seen in Pownal
(5/10) and Brandon (5/11).

 

SCARLET TANAGERS* were reported throughout the state, with the first
sighting taking place in Sunderland on 5/7.

 

LINCOLN SPARROWS* were sighted in Essex and South Starksboro on 5/6.  

 

Two male and one female ORCHARD ORIOLES* were seen at the Farrell Access,
Dead Creek WMA on 5/11.The first of many sightings of BALTIMORE ORIOLES*
this week occurred in Brattleboro on 5/5.

 

The first of many sightings throughout Vermont of PURPLE FINCHES* this week
occurred in Brattleboro and Woodstock on 5/5.  The first HOUSE FINCH* of the
season was seen in NOrwich on 5/5.
