This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for December 17, 2007 covering the
period December 10 -16, 2007.

 

Highlights this week include a RED-SHOULDERED x RED-TAILED HAWK hybrid in
Westminster on the Saxton's River Christmas Bird Count on 12/15, an adult
GOLDEN EAGLE flying over Thetford Center on 12/12, a second-hand report of a
NORTHERN HAWK OWL at a feeder in Richford on 12/9; a BOREAL CHICKADEE on the
Burlington CBC at a feeder near Shelburne Bay on 12/16, a PINE WARBLER
visiting a suet feeder in Middlebury on 12/15; an immature PRAIRIE WARBLER
on the Green Mountain College campus in Poultney on 12/10 (first spotted on
12/7), a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER sighted in Brattleboro on 12/15 and 12/16,
and 4 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS on the Saxton's River CBC. 

 

A male MERLIN was seen in Middlebury on 12/15.

 

A NORTHERN FLICKER was spotted in Ferrisburg on 12/16.

 

Several NORTHERN SHRIKE sightings again this week (Waitsfield, Moretown,
Clarendon, Strafford, Rutland, West Rutland Marsh, Johnson, Montpelier, West
Brattleboro and Leicester) confirm that this is a good winter for shrikes in
Vermont.

 

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen in Ferrisburg, South Strafford, Brandon, West
Rutland, Grand Isle and Bristol this week.  CEDAR WAXWINGS were seen in West
Rutland (158, 120).

 

PINE GROSBEAKS continue to be seen all over the state, with the highest
numbers in Plainfield (99), Brattleboro (51), Waitsfield (40) and Essex
Junction (25).  

 

COMMON REDPOLL sightings also continue to be numerous, with the greatest
numbers reported in West Brattleboro (100), Brattleboro (81), Plainfield
(43), Grand Isle (35) and Waitsfield (35).
