This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, March 5, 
2014.



A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER has been seen on numerous days visiting a birdfeeder 
in Alstead since about January 1st, and was last reported on March 9th.



A SPOTTED TOWHEE was spotted in Rye on January 25th, and has been seen many 
times since then. It was last reported on March 2nd. It has been seen 
foraging on the ground in the scrub on the corner nearest the traffic island 
at the intersection of Central Road and Route 1A.



At least 4 SNOWY OWLS continued to be reported in New Hampshire during the 
past week including 1 in Rye, 1 in the Hampton and Seabrook marsh area, and 
there was an unconfirmed report of 2 SNOWY OWLS in Strafford on March 7th.



A pair of BARROW’S GOLDENEYES was seen on the Nashua River near the 
Merrimack River in Nashua on March 8th.



A BARROW’S GOLDENEYE, 333 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 2 GREATER SCAUP, 20 RING-NECKED 
DUCKS, 9 BUFFLEHEADS, 68 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, and 21 COMMON MERGANSERS were 
seen on the Connecticut River above the Vernon Dam in Hinsdale on March 8th, 
and 2 RED-NECKED GREBES were seen here on the 11th.



3 GADWALLS were reported from Chapel Brook in North Hampton on March 12th.



4 GREATER SCAUP were seen on Paugus Bay, 2 LESSER SCAUP were seen on the 
Winnepesaukee River, and a RED-NECKED GREBE was seen in Opechee Bay, all in 
Laconia on March 7th.



A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen on the Merrimack River in Nashua on March 
6th, and a GREAT CORMORANT was seen on the Merrimack River in Concord on 
March 9th.



A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS was seen atop the Christian Science Church in 
Concord, and single birds were reported from Orford, Manchester, and Dover, 
all during the past week.



A pair of MERLINS was seen at the Hanover Golf Course on March 11th.



A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Hanover on March 7th.



A FISH CROW was reported from Hooksett on March 9th, and 1 was reported from 
Durham on the 11th.



A flock of 4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was seen in Walpole on March 8th.



A KILLDEER was seen in Dover on March 11th, and another was seen in 
Manchester on the 12th.



A HERMIT THRUSH was seen in Newmarket on March 10th.



A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and a WHITE-CROWNED 
SPARROW were all seen in Greenland on March 8th.



There were several reports of TURKEY VULTURES during the past week including 
7 in Concord, 2 in Nashua, 1 in Hanover, and 1 in Newmarket.



Birders on a boat trip to Jeffrey’s Ledge on March 8th reported the 
following highlights: 6 NORTHERN FULMARS, 2 NORTHERN GANNETS, 2 DOVEKIES, 2 
COMMON MURRES, many RAZORBILLS, 4 BLACK GUILLEMOTS, 2 ATLANTIC PUFFINS, 2 
BLACK-LEGGED KITTWAKES, and an ICELAND GULL.
