This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, December 
28th, 2011..



A BARNACLE GOOSE discovered in Rollinsford on December 14th, has been seen 
regularly in fields along Roberts Road in Rollinsford near Route 4, and was 
last reported on the 28th. It is usually found among flocks of CANADA GEESE.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along Bog Road in Penacook on December 26th.



A late-migrating BALTIMORE ORIOLE was found in Hampton Falls on December 
26th, and was located again on the 27th.



A MERLIN was reported from Nashua on December 26th.



A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard "tooting" in the evening in Webster on 
December 26th, and a BARRED OWL was heard "hooting" during the day in 
Chichester on December 23rd.



20 EVENING GROSBEAKS and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD were seen on North River Road in 
Milford on December 24th.



20 PURPLE FINCHES and 50 PINE SISKINS were reported from a birdfeeder in 
Berlin on December 27th.



Highlights of the Pittsburg Christmas Bird Count, held on December 22nd, 
included: a HOODED MERGANSER, 11 COMMON MERGANSERS, 1 RED-BREASTED 
MERGANSER, 15 RUFFED GROUSE, 78 WILD TURKEYS, 2 COMMON LOONS, 4 BALD EAGLES, 
a GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL, a BELTED KINGFISHER, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, 26 GRAY 
JAYS, 56 COMMON RAVENS, 883 BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, 66 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 
266 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 3 BROWN CREEPERS, 267 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 
7 AMERICAN ROBINS, 4 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, 29 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, 2 SNOW 
BUNTINGS, 2 PINE GROSBEAKS, 169 PURPLE FINCHES, 37 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, 
1,833 PINE SISKINS, and 102 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES.



Highlights of the Errol Christmas Bird Count, held on December 23rd, 
included: 4 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 6 COMMON MERGANSERS, 14 RUFFED GROUSE, 20 
WILD TURKEYS, a BALD EAGLE, 5 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 
8 GRAY JAYS, 19 COMMON RAVENS, 3 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 193 RED-BREASTED 
NUTHATCHES, 12 BROWN CREEPERS, 96 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, an AMERICAN 
ROBIN, 7 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 16 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, 49 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, a 
NORTHERN CARDINAL, 58 PURPLE FINCHES, 9 RED CROSSBILLS, 100 WHITE-WINGED 
CROSSBILLS, 1,714 PINE SISKINS, and 199 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES.



Highlights of the Lee-Durham Christmas Bird Count, held on December 26th, 
included: a GADWALL, 2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, a PIED-BILLED GREBE, 15 TURKEY 
VULTURES, a NORTHERN HARRIER, several ICELAND GULLS, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED 
GULL, a GLAUCOUS GULL, an EASTERN SCREECH OWL, a WINTER WREN, a HERMIT 
THRUSH, a GRAY CATBIRD, a SWAMP SPARROW, a SNOW BUNTING, and a PURPLE FINCH.



Over 260 SANDERLINGS were tallied on North Beach in Hampton on December 
24th.



2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 14 HOODED MERGANSERS, 27 
COMMON MERGANSERS, and a RING-BILLED GULL were all seen in Spofford Lake in 
Chesterfield on December 26th.



A LONG-TAILED DUCK and a BUFFLEHEAD were seen on the Connecticut River near 
Hanover on December 23rd.



A few COMMON LOONS, COMMON GOLDENEYES, and HOODED MERGANSERS were reported 
from several inland locations during the past week.
