I've been hearing Ovenbirds calling at all hours during the past week or so.
One night I got up to let the dogs out and heard one at 3 am, then last
night heard one at about 10p singing a longer alternative song. I am not
really sure that's what it was, but I had just happened upon a link online
of an ovenbird singing a song similar to that, and it did start with a burst
of teacher.. And it didn't sound like anyone else I know that lives around
here. I've heard White Throated Sparrows at night quite often, but if I
knew that Ovenbirds sang at night, I forgot. There was also a Barred Owl
hooting in the middle of the afternoon yesterday, quite a bit, too. Heard
one again at night.
Come to think of it, seems like birds are behaving rather strangely
lately..golden winged warbler sightings, Olive-sided Flycatchers returning
to the area (?) The N. Shoveler in the puddle at the church in Norwich, the
Golden-Crowned Sparrow at the Hardys' house, , Merlins nesting at Hanover
Country Club. Chickadees that think they're Hummingbirds. Catbirds coming to
my porch feeders. Cowbirds deciding to *settle *in my neighborhood. And
where is my Pe-wee, and the Winter Wren that used to live near the trestle
bridge on Bill Ballard Trail?
Did they ever find out what killed those flocks of Red-Winged Blackbirds in
Arkansas? I tried googling for the answers, but didn't find anything.
