This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Tuesday, November 11th, 
2014.



A WESTERN GREBE was discovered off of Great Boar’s Head in Hampton on 
November 6th, and has been seen there numerous times since then. It has been 
seen both on the north and south sides of Great Boar’s Head and was last 
reported on the 9th.



3 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS including an adult male, a first year male and a 
female have been seen regularly with a large flock of EUROPEAN STARLINGS, 
BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS, and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS foraging in grassy and 
shrubby locations along Route 1A, side streets along Route 1A, and along 
Route 286 in Seabrook during the past week. They were most recently reported 
from near Hampton Beach State Park on November 11th.



A juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen near the public boat launch at 
Adams Point in Durham on November 10th and 11th.



A possible WESTERN TANAGER was reported from near Memorial Hall on the 
Plymouth State University campus on November 5th.



A LARK SPARROW was seen near the Edelhab unit near the Seacoast Science 
Center at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on November 8th.



A DICKCISSEL was seen at the Fort Eddy gardens, located in the field with 
the large sycamore on November 8th and 9th.



A male EURASIAN WIGEON was seen with 150 AMERICAN WIGEONS, and a NORTHERN 
PINTAIL on the Greenland side of Great Bay on November 8th.



A SNOWY OWL was seen on the Seabrook side of the entrance to Hampton Harbor, 
and a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen at Hampton Beach State Park, both on November 
8th.



2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen in fields at Woodmont Orchard in Hollis on 
November 10th.



9 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen in coastal Hampton on November 9th, and 
a WILSON’S SNIPE was seen in Hampton Marsh on the 9th.



An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on November 
10th.



11 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen on the coast in Hampton on November 9th.



8 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen from the top of Pack Monadnock in Peterborough 
on November 6th.



A flock of an estimated 450 SNOW BUNTINGS, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR, an AMERICAN 
PIPIT, and 2 HORNED LARKS were seen at Hampton Beach State Park on November 
11th.



A LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 150 HORNED LARKS, 2 KILLDEER, and a VESPER SPARROW were 
seen at Morrill’s Farm in Penacook on November 9th.



A male GADWALL, 7 AMERICAN COOTS, and 3 late-migrating TREE SWALLOWS were 
seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on November 11th. A RUDDY DUCK 
was seen here on the 8th.



5 RUDDY DUCKS, 4 HORNED GREBES, and an AMERICAN COOT were all seen on Great 
Bay from the Discovery Center in Greenland on November 8th.



2 HORNED GREBES and a PIED-BILLED GREBE were seen on Spofford Lake in 
Chesterfield on November 9th.



3 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 38 AMERICAN WIGEONS, and 237 RED-THROATED LOONS were 
tallied migrating south along the coast in Hampton on November 9th.



A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS was reported from Concord on November 11th.



A PEREGRINE FALCON and a GREAT EGRET were seen in Seabrook Marsh on November 
9th.



A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was seen in Greenland on November 8th, and a COMMON 
YELLOWTHROAT was seen in Hampton on November 9th.



A PALM WARBLER, and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER were seen in Penacook on 
November 9th.



A number of FOX SPARROWS, and AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were reported from 
scattered locations during the past week.



Fall season RAPTOR migration continues with migrating raptors being counted 
daily at hawk-watching sites. To date, the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration 
Observatory in Peterborough has counted over 13,400 raptors, the Carter Hill 
Observatory in Concord has counted over 6,800 raptors, and hawk-watchers on 
Little Round Top in Bristol have seen over 2,700 raptors. Of particular note 
was a GOLDEN EAGLE seen on November 7th, and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK seen on 
November 8th, both from Pack Monadnock. Be sure to visit these viewing sites 
this fall season to help out with the counts! Pack Monadnock and Carter Hill 
will be staffed by NH Audubon through November 15th. Although flights of 
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS have passed, there are still many more raptors to be 
counted.



An estimated 50,000 BLACKBIRDS were reported from the Great Bog in 
Portsmouth on November 10th.
