This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for May 19, 2008 covering the period May
12-18, 2008.  (* = first of year sightings)

 

The highlights of the week were a SANDHILL CRANE at Ompompanoosuc Flats in
Norwich on 5/18; a LITTLE GULL in Grand Isle on 5/13; a male and female
ORCHARD ORIOLE* at the Farrell Access at Dead Creek WMA on 5/15 and 2 RED
CROSSBILL sightings in central Vermont on 2/15, 2 in Norwich and 2 in
Hartland.

 

A HORNED GREBE was sighted off Grand Isle on 5/18.

 

A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, an unusual sighting in central Vermont, was
seen at the Ledyard Bridge in Norwich on 5/18.

 

Two CASPIAN TERNS were sighted at Delta Park in Colchester on 5/13 and at
Donahue Sea Caves in Burlington on 5/13.

 

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO* was spotted at the West Rutland Marsh on 5/15 and in
Norwich on 5/18.

 

WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard in Goshen and Brandon on 5/17.

 

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO* was observed in South Starksboro on 5/16.

 

A SWAINSON'S THRUSH* was seen in Middlebury on 5/16 and in Rochester on
5/18.

 

BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS were sighted in Saxton's River on 5/13 and 5/17, West
Rutland Marsh on 5/15, Proctor on 5/17 and in Monkton on 5/18.  A BREWSTER'S
WARBLER (hybrid) was seen and heard at Snake Mt. on 5/17 and in Monkton on
5/18. A BLACKPOLL WARBLER* was spotted in Rochester on 5/18.  A MOURNING
WARBLER* was observed in Charlotte on 5/17 and a WILSON'S WARBLER* was
spotted in Monkton on 5/18.

 

A lingering AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was seen in Saxton's River on 5/13.
