This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, August 14th,
2008.
3 MISSISSIPPI KITES are regularly being seen in Newmarket. There is a pair
that is nesting, and they are feeding one chick. To see the birds, take
Route 152 (South Main Street) west from the center of Newmarket. You will
see the High School on the left (south) side of the road. Park at the High
School and walk west down the street. Do not park in driveways, or along
Route 152. The KITES have been seen flying and landing in the tops of trees
between Maplecrest and Pond Streets. This is a residential neighborhood, and
visiting birders should respect the rights of property owners. Please do not
walk on private property, including lawns, talk and laugh loudly early in
the morning, or block residents from using the sidewalk. Also, take care not
to alarm the birds. Do not play recordings, stand under the nest, or harass
the birds in any way.
A ROYAL TERN was seen along the coast in Rye on August 9th.
A LEAST TERN was seen flying over Route 286 in Seabrook on August 9th.
A ROYAL TERN, a BLACK TERN, 19 CORYS SHEARWATERS, and 8 GREATER SHEARWATERS,
43 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, and 11 NORTHERN GANNETS were seen on Granite
State Whalewatch cruises out of Rye Harbor on August 9th. 2 LEAST TERNS and
143 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were reported from a similar cruise on August
10th.
244 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were reported from along the coast on August
12th.
A LITTLE GULL, 16 ROSEATE TERNS, 60 COMMON TERNS, and a HUDSONIAN GODWIT
were seen in Hampton Harbor on August 7th, and 2 ARCTIC TERNS were seen here
on the 11th.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen in the fields adjacent to the Strafford
County Complex in Dover on August 8th.
A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen on a pond in Effingham on August 7th, and
one was seen in the Little River marsh in Hampton on August 10th.
A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen in Hampton Harbor on August 10th.
3 RED KNOTS were seen flying over Hampton Beach State Park on August 9th.
A western subspecies WILLET was seen in Henry's Pool in Hampton on August
9th.
8 RUDDY TURNSTONES were reported from Concord Point in Rye on August 9th.
A RED-NECKED GREBE and a LESSER YELLOWLEGS were reported from Pequaket Pond
in Albany on August 7th. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen along the coast in Rye
on August 12th.
A HORNED GREBE continues to be seen in Rye just south of Odiorne Point State
Park and was last reported on August 10th.
A drake LESSER SCAUP was seen from Great Boar's Head in Hampton on August
8th.
An immature BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen in Rye Harbor on August 9th and an
adult BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen from Seabrook Beach on August 11th.
10 LAUGHING GULLS were reported from the coast on August 11th.
6 UPLAND SANDPIPERS, 5 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, and a VESPER SPARROW were
reported from the Pease International Tradeport runways on August 8th, and 5
AMERICAN KESTRELS and 9 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were reported from here on the
9th.
A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was reported from Hinsdale on August 7th, and 2
were reported from Hampton on August 8th. Several GREAT EGRETS were reported
from inland locations during the past week.
2 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, a SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW, and a
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO were reported form Lubberland Creek in Newmarket on
August 9th. A NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was seen at Philbrick Pond marsh
in North Hampton on August 11th.
A FISH CROW was reported from Hampton Marsh on August 10th.
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was reported from Surry on August 10th.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Portsmouth on August 11th.
COMMON NIGHTHAWK migration has started with several sightings reported
during the past week.
Over 1.000 TREE SWALLOWS were seen in Hampton Marsh from the end of Depot
Road in Hampton Falls on August 13th.
