This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, September
12th, 2012.
A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen in Newmarket on September 9th.
A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on
September 11th.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen on Balch Hill in Hanover on September
11th.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen in Penacook on September 8th.
3 RED CROSSBILLS were reported from Penacook on September 9th.
5 MARBLED GODWITS were seen in Hampton Harbor on September 8th, and 3 were
seen there again on the 11th.
3 STILT SANDPIPERS, a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, and a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER
were seen in Hampton on September 11th.
2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS were seen in coastal Rye on September 9th.
A PIPING PLOVER was seen on Jenness Beach in Rye on September 9th.
There was an unconfirmed report of a WILSON'S PLOVER at Odiorne Point State
Park in Rye on September 5th.
3 FORSTER'S TERNS were reported from Hampton on September 11th.
2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen in Rye on September 9th.
A SOOTY SHEARWATER, 2 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 14 GREAT SHEARWATERS, a LAUGHING
GULL, and a WILSON'S STORM-PETREL were seen in New Hampshire waters by
birders on a whale watch cruise out of Rye on September 9th
30 NORTHERN GANNETS were seen from North Hampton on September 8th.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 7 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, a LAUGHING GULL, a
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 ROSEATE TERNS, 25 COMMON TERNS, and 7 FORSTER'S
TERNS and were all seen in Hampton Harbor on September 9th.
An oddly appearing heron was reported from the coast on September 9th. It
has been described as a possible hybrid of a SNOWY EGRET and TRI-COLORED
HERON, and has been seen several times in the company of SNOWY EGRETS. Over
70 SNOWY EGRETS and 10 GREAT EGRETS were seen in Philbrick Marsh in North
Hampton on September 8th.
A GREAT EGRET was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord on September 11th, and 2
were seen in West Lebanon on September 6th.
A GLOSSY IBIS was seen in Rye on September 11th.
An estimated 20 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were reported from Seabrook, in
marshes just south of Hampton Harbor on September 6th.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was reported from Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in
Jefferson on September 9th.
A NELSON'S SPARROW was reported from the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant
on September 12th.
2 EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS were heard at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on
September 11th.
There were many migrating warblers and vireos reported during the past week,
including multiple PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, TENNESSEE WARBLERS, BAY-BREASTED
WARBLERS, and CAPE MAY WARBLERS.
RAPTOR migration is under way with 3,991 raptors already reported from the
Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, and 316
reported from the Carter Hill Observatory in Concord. Be sure to visit these
observatories this fall season to help out with the count!
A CHUKAR, and exotic bird probably released for hunting, was reported from
Deerfield on September 10th.
