This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, October 23rd, 
2008.



A LECONTE'S SPARROW was seen at the Sherman Farm fields in East Conway on 
October 18th but has not been relocated.



A SANDHILL CRANE was seen along Plains Road in Monroe on October 18th.



15 FORSTER'S TERNS were seen in the Hampton Harbor area on October 22nd.



2 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS and 3 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen in 
Hampton Marsh on October 17th, and 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS were seen here on the 
18th.



A first-winter plumaged ICELAND GULL and 3 RUDDY DUCKS were seen at the 
Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on October 21st.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE, a PINE GROSBEAK, and about 30 PINE SISKINS were seen at 
the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on October 21st. Over 
40 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen here on October 20th, and over 90 were 
counted here on the 17th.



A PINE GROSBEAK was heard in Nelson on October 17th, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE 
was seen at the Fowler Farm in Rochester, also on the 17th.



A PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 75 AMERICAN PIPITS were reported from Horseshoe 
Pond in Concord, and 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER were 
seen in Hampton Marsh, all on October 19th.



A PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 50 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and an EASTERN MEADOWLARK were 
all seen on Morrill Farm in Penacook on October 21st.



10 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen in Hampton Harbor on October 22nd.



Over 375 NORTHERN GANNETS were seen along the coast on October 19th. 298 
RED-THROATED LOONS and 236 COMMON LOONS were seen migrating along the coast 
on October 18th.



Over 300 BLACK SCOTERS, 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, and 3 LESSER SCAUP were seen 
on Lake Massabesic in Auburn on October 17th. A flock of 11 BLACK SCOTERS 
was seen on the Merrimack River north of Horseshoe Pond in Concord on 
October 18th. A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, a BLACK SCOTER, and 3 PIED-BILLED 
GREBES and were seen along the Connecticut River at the setbacks in Hinsdale 
on October 19th.



2 SURF SCOTERS and 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen at Cherry Pond at NH 
Audubon's Pondicherry Wildlife Sanctuary in Jefferson on October 22nd, and 2 
BUFFLEHEADS and 5 COMMON GOLDENEYES were seen here on the 19th.  38 BLACK 
SCOTERS were also seen here on the 17th.



A NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was seen in the shrubs along the edge of 
Horseshoe Pond and the adjacent cornfield in Concord on October 22nd. A 
single SNOW BUNTING was reported from here on the 20th and again on the 
22nd.



25 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from Hampton Beach State Park on October 
22nd.



A LAPLAND LONGSPUR and 3 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from along the coast, 
and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR and over 60 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen at Chickering 
Farm in Westmoreland, all on October 19th.



Over 75 AMERICAN PIPITS and a BOBOLINK were seen at Moore Fields, located 
along Route 155A in Durham, on October 17th.



Over 60 PINE SISKINS were seen in Clarksville, and over 50 were seen at the 
Trails at Pickering Ponds in Rochester, all on October 18th. 50 PINE SISKINS 
were reported from Chichester on the 22nd.



An EASTERN SCREECH OWL was reported from Exeter on October 21st.



Warbler migration is nearing an end for the season, with only a few reports 
during the past week, mainly of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, PALM WARBLERS, and 
BLACKPOLL WARBLER, and a few COMMON YELLOWTHROATS and NASHVILLE WARBLERS.



HAWK migration continues, with over 9,000 raptors reported from the Pack 
Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, and over 2,600 hawks 
reported from the Carter Hill Orchard observation platform in Concord since 
September 1st. Be sure to visit both observatories to help out with the 
count! New Hampshire Audubon staffs both locations.
