This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, March 2nd, 
2011.



A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was discovered feeding in fruit trees and in nearby 
treetops near the town library in Strafford on February 11th, and was last 
reported on the 23rd. To try to see this bird, it is recommended that you 
stay in your car and view the fruit trees from a distance.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was reported from Strafford on March 2nd,



A HOARY REDPOLL was reported from Strafford on February 27th.



COMMON REDPOLL numbers during the past week increased dramatically, 
especially on the inclement days, with over 1,500 reported. Highlights 
included: 300 in Strafford, 220 in Jefferson, 200 in Lyme, 150 in 
Pittsfield, 100 in Goffstown, 100 in Hancock, 80 in Sandwich, 60 in 
Henniker, 50 in Francestown, 45 in Wolfeboro, 35 in Milford, 35 in 
Canterbury, 30 in Penacook, 25 in Warner, 20 in Rye, 20 in East Kingston, 
and 20 in Wilmot.



Over 800 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen on the Plymouth State University campus 
on March 2nd, and 85 were seen in Hanover on February 27th.



11 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen along Route 1A in Rye on February 26th.



18 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Jefferson on February 28th, 25 were seen 
in Warner on the 25th, 25 were seen in Francestown on the 25th, and 8 were 
reported from North Barnstead on the 24th.



20 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from Rye on February 24th.



81 HORNED LARKS, and 6 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from a dairy farm in 
Stratham on February 26th.



2 FISH CROWS were reported from West Ossipee on February 26th, and one was 
reported from Concord on March 2nd.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor, and an ICELAND GULL was seen in 
Portsmouth, both on February 26th.



A male NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in Penacook, and 2 AMERICAN WIGEONS were 
seen in Portsmouth, all on February 26th.



6 RING-NECKED DUCKS and a PIED-BILLED GREBE were seen on the Connecticut 
River in Hinsdale on February 27th.



30 TURKEY VULTURES were seen roosting in white pine trees on Edmatteric 
Drive in Nashua on February 24th.



20 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were reported from Manchester on February 28th.



A HERMIT THRUSH was reported from Rye on February 23rd.



There were several reports of COMMON GRACKLES, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, 
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, TURKEY VULTURES, CAROLINA WRENS, and RED-BELLIED 
WOODPECKERS during the past week.
