This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, March 20th,
2008.
A SANDHILL CRANE was seen and photographed flying north in Rochester, near
Pickering Ponds, on March 14th.
A dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen on Island Path in Hampton on March
18th.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen on the coast just south of Great Boar's
Head in Hampton on March 17th.
2 CANVASBACKS, 2 REDHEADS, and 145 RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen on Powwow
Pond in Kingston on March 15th. A CANVASBACK was reported from the
Connecticut River in Monroe on March 13th.
Sightings of waterfowl on Great Bay during the past week included 2
REDHEADS, 13 CANVASBACKS, 6 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 8 AMERICAN WIGEON and over
1,000 GREATER SCAUP.
11 CANVASBACKS, 8 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 7 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 AMERICAN WIGEON,
3 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 25 WOOD DUCKS, 81 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 22 HOODED
MERGANSERS, 25 COMMON MERGANSERS, and 500 CANADA GEESE were seen in
Hinsdale, above and below the dam on the Connecticut River on March 14th.
A pair of GADWALL was seen in a roadside marsh along Route 1A in North
Hampton on March 18th.
A NORTHERN SHOVELER and an ICELAND GULL were seen at the Exeter Wastewater
Treatment facility on March 15th.
4 BRANT were seen in New Castle on March 17th, and 4 were seen in Hampton
Harbor on the 16th.
50 COMMON GOLDENEYES and 30 COMMON MERGANSERS were seen on the Merrimack
River at Sewall's Falls in Concord on March 18th.
NORTHERN SHRIKES were reported from Ashland, Croyden, Walpole (3), and
Greenland during the past week.
A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen in Deerfield on March 19th, and one was
seen in Sandwich on the 17th.
PINE GROSBEAK sightings during the past week included 13 in Bedford, 2 in
Brentwood, 10 in Hinsdale, and 1 in Ashland.
BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included 250 in Concord, 100
in Dover, 50 in Hanover, 40 in Conway, 19 in Ashland, and 3 in Keene.
A few large flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS are still being reported from north of
the White Mountains, but there have been few recent sightings from the
southern part of the state.
A flock of 6 EVENING GROSBEAKS was reported from Gilsum on March 19th.
SNOW BUNTING sightings during the past week included 12 in Walpole on March
19th, 8 in Hampton on the 18th, and 12 in Durham on the 15th.
A flock of 150 HORNED LARKS and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen in Walpole on
the 16th.
There were several reports of FISH CROW from the southern part of the state
during the past week.
An EASTERN PHOEBE was reported from Penacook on March 16th.
A WINTER WREN was reported from Walpole on March 14th, and CHIPPING SPARROWS
were reported from several locations, also on the 14th.
There were several reports of RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS and PEREGRINE FALCONS
during the past week, presumably returning migrants.
14 BOREAL CHICKADEES were reported from the east side of Mount Washington in
Tuckerman's and Huntington's Ravines on March 18th.
Other early-returning migrants during the past week included many sightings
of RED- WINGED BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES, as well as TURKEY VULTURE and
KILLDEER sightings from several locations mainly south of Concord.
