This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, October 8th,
2018.
A GREATED WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen with a flock of CANADA GEESE in
Rochester on September 27th. The flock has been moving around, and was last
reported from Pickering Ponds on October 3rd. A BRANT was seen at the
Lebanon Airport on October 7th.
81 BLACK SCOTERS and 7 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen on Cherry Pond in
Jefferson at the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge on October 8th.
A NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in Pittsfield on October 3rd, and 2 NORTHERN
SHOVELERS were seen in Exeter on the 7th. A LESSER SCAUP was seen in Rye and
1 was seen in Rochester, both during the past week.
2 SANDHILL CRANES continue to be seen in a field along Ledge Farm Road in
Nottingham, and were last reported on October 4th. A family of 3 SANDHILL
CRANES was seen in Monroe, and a solo 1 was reported from Keene State WMA,
all on the 7th.
An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen in coastal Seabrook along Route 286
on October 3rd, and a GREAT EGRET was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord on
the 8th.
A STILT SANDPIPER was seen on October 3rd, and a RED KNOT was seen on the
5th, both in coastal marshes in Hampton.
A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was reported from the Esther Currier WMA at Low Plain
in New London on October 1st.
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on
October 3rd.
A few YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER,
several BLACKPOLL, CAPE MAY, BAY-BREASTED, and TENNESSEE WARBLERS, 2
MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, a MOURNING WARBLER, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and a CANADA
WARBLER were all reported from scattered locations during the past week.
A DICKCISSEL was seen at Great Bay Farm in Greenland on October 7th, 2 were
reported from Woodmont Orchard in Hollis on the 7th, 1 was reported from Rye
Harbor State Park on the 5th, and 1 was reported from Morrill’s Farm in
Penacook on the 8th.
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were reported from Bicentennial Park in Hampton, Goss
Farm in Rye, Great Bay Farm in Greenland, Woodridge Park in Durham, and Tow
Path Lane in Concord during the past week.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was reported from Woodmont Orchard in Hollis on October
5th, and small flocks of AMERICAN PIPITS were reported from farm field
habitats in scattered locations during the past week.
A RED CROSSBILL was reported from Sandwich on October 7th.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was photographed in Bethlehem on October 6th.
PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were reported from Conway, West Rumney, Sandwich, and
Rye during the past week.
Other late-migrants of note during the past week included: 2 CHIMNEY SWIFTS,
2 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, a few GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES, an EASTERN
WOOD-PEWEE, a LEAST FLYCATCHER, a MARSH WREN, several ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAKS, and a few SCARLET TANAGERS.
RAPTOR migration is under way with migrating raptors being counted daily at
the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough. Pack
Monadnock has tallied over 8,000 raptors since September 1st. The majority
of the raptors that have been seen so far this season were BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS, but over 130 BALD EAGLES have also been seen. Be sure to visit the
observatory this fall season to help out with the count!
