Yesterday, on the Hanover golf course, I witnessed some crow activity that I
feel compelled to share.

Many of you know that the Hanover golf course crows are a special study in
themselves. They know all the locations where golfers have to walk a short
distance from their golf carts to the greens, and are adept at entering the
carts and making off with whatever food items might be in them. All the members
are very aware, but unsuspecting visitors contribute sandwiches, candy bars, and
assorted other food items to the welfare of the resident flock. Incidently this
seems to be unique to Hanover, hence the vulnerability of visitors.

All that by way of background. Yesterday, as I was about to putt I noticed that
three crows had the paper bag my cartmate had brought his lunch in on the cart
path and were pecking away at it. When I called my friend's attention to it he
told me it was no problem as he had already consumed his lunch. A few minutes
later, as we were leaving the green, we saw one of the crows flying toward us
with several big potato chips in his beak. He landed on the grass next to the
green, released the chips, and methodically began to put newly mowed grass
clippings on top of the chips. He would get a mouthful and then drop it on the
chips. Finally, he dragged grass over them with his beak and when the chips
were totally covered, flew back to the paper bag where the other crows were
still pecking away.

This seemed to us to be the equivalent of a dog burying a bone. We all felt we
had witnessed a rare event in nature.

Mike
