This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, March 21st, 
2016.



A REDWING was found foraging with AMERICAN ROBINS in Hollis on March 13th. 
It was seen again on the 14th, 15th, and 16th, but has not been seen since 
then and is presumed to have left. The REDWING was seen at the far north end 
of the baseball field located off of Jeff Smith Way at the Hollis Brookline 
High School. This is an Old World species that is a vagrant to North 
America, and not related to the similarly named Red-winged Blackbird.



A VARIED THRUSH was discovered visiting a birdfeeder at a private residence 
in Merrimack on March 3rd, and was seen numerous times after that. It was 
seen again on March 17th, and was last reported on the 21st.



A SNOWY OWL was seen at Rye Harbor State Park on March 19th, 1 was seen in 
Hampton marsh on the 21st, and 1 was seen in coastal North Hampton on the 
21st. When viewing a Snowy Owl please do not disturb the bird by approaching

A GLAUCOUS GULL continues to be seen on the Seabrook side of Hampton Harbor 
and was last reported on March 19th.



13 SNOW GEESE were seen in Concord on March 19th.



A female NORTHERN SHOVELER, 3 AMERICAN WIGEONS, 8 NORTHERN PINTAILS, and 60 
GREEN-WINGED TEAL were seen at Great Meadow in Charlestown on March 16th.



A male NORTHERN SHOVELER was seen on the Connecticut River in Hanover on 
March 18th, and 1 was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on the 
19th.



3 pairs of GADWALLS and 8 GREATER SCAUP were seen on the Connecticut River 
in Lebanon on March 17th.



An AMERICAN WIGEON and a NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen in Meredith on March 
16th.



3 AMERICAN WIGEONS and a NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen at Upper Suncook Lake on 
March 19th.



4 NORTHERN PINTAILS were reported from Chapman’s Landing in Stratham on 
March 17th, and 1 was seen in New Hampton on the 20th.



84 RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen at Lily Pond in Gilford on March 20th.



4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in Jefferson on March 19th, and 8 RED 
CROSSBILLS were seen in Errol on the 18th.



A flock of 70 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS was seen in North Conway, and a flock of 20 
was seen in Etna, all on the 21st.



A GREAT EGRET was seen in Rye on March 21st.



A few TREE SWALLOWS were reported from scattered locations during the past 
week beginning on March 17th.



2 BOREAL CHICKADEES were seen on the Trudeau Road trails in Bethlehem on 
March 16th.



A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard in Lyme on March 20th, and an EASTERN 
SCREECH-OWL was reported from Dover on the 19th.



7 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were seen at the Strafford County Complex in Dover on 
March 20th, and 2 were seen in Walpole on the 16th.



There has been a small surge of spring migrants reported including: 
KILLDEER, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, WILSON’S SNIPE, EASTERN PHOEBE, TURKEY VULTURE, 
FOX SPARROW, RUSTY BLACKBIRD and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER. Returning raptors 
have included AMERICAN KESTREL, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, and NORTHERN HARRIER.
