This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for December 24, 2007 covering the
period December 17 -23, 2007.

 

Highlights this week include a PINE WARBLER present in Middlebury on 12/20
and 12/21; one CHIPPING SPARROW seen on the Randolph CBC on 12/15 and 7 in
Rutland on 12/21.

 

Five MUTE SWANS were spotted at the Grand Isle Ferry Landing on 12/21 and
12/22.  A RING-NECKED DUCK was observed off Grand Isle on 12/22.  A male
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was sighted among 370 COMMON GOLDENEYES in Mallet's Bay
on 12/16.  A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen off Grand Isle on 12/22 and
12/23 and one RUDDY DUCK on 12/22.

 

A SNOWY OWL was seen in a field in Roxbury on 12/15 and a SHORT-EARED OWL
was spotted in New Haven on 12/19.

 

Four NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen on the Randolph CBC on 12/15 as well as one
in Hartland and one in Hartford this week.

 

BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were present in Ferrisburg, Shelburne and Waitsfield this
week, while CEDAR WAXWINGS were seen in Brandon, Middlebury and Saxton's
River.

 

There were many sightings of PINE GROSBEAKS this week, with high numbers in
Essex (50+), South Burlington (40), Morrisville (37) and Norwich (35).  

 

A 1st year male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was spotted in South Burlington on
12/18.

 

COMMON REDPOLL sightings were numerous this week, with high numbers is
Waitsfield (60), Hartland (45) and Huntington (35).  On 12/21 - 12/24 a
HOARY REDPOLL was spotted in Waitsfield.

 

EVENING GROSBEAKS were observed in Randolph, Moretown, South Starksboro,
Saxton's River and Enosburg.
